Analyze My Heart

Musing on the Analyzing of Poetry

Allana Calhoun
I used to hate when my English or Literature teachers would sit and analyze the classic works we were reading. To me it seemed obnoxious to preach about what the author meant by writing this or that when you didn't know the author personally.

This topic was brought back in mind just now because of the comments I have received on my poem "My Heart", found here: My Heart

Not there is anything wrong with the comments. They simply made me realize how abstract my poem is despite the vision I had in my mind when I wrote it. That is the beauty of poetry though. The fact that it is such an abstract art with its metaphors, allusions and even illusions opens up the doors of interpretation.

I really don't mind that people are seeing my poem from a different perspective than I intended. Au contraire, I think it is kind of neat that they are! It shows that my little piece of work can mean something different to everyone. I think that gives the poem more potential for a long and prosperous life versus if it only meant something to a particular group or type of people.

So go ahead and analyze my work! Let's see what you get out of it. I am curious to see if anyone actually sees it the way I was writing it. The only thing I ask, is that somewhere in the far future, don't profess to know exactly what this author meant by these words.

This is so true! It's actually quite interesting to see how others interpret your thoughts.

I think the nice thing about poetry is that it can have various meanings for different people.

Actually, I do believe there is bad poetry, some very bad, not yours of course. And it is all open for interpretation. We each see things differently, which is why some say there is no bad poetry and others say there is. Get some mileage out of that poem Tink!
