Analyzing Dreams: Tornadoes in Dreams

Common Dream Themes

While outside enjoying the sunshine and spending time with loved ones, you suddenly look off in the distance and see a tornado. You stare in amazement as the tornado quickly grows bigger. Then you realize it's swiftly heading your way. Your brain is telling you to run, but your feet are rooted to the ground in fear. Finally, you make a desperate dash for safety with your loved ones, only to find that it is too late. In the midst of flying debris, you realize the tornado is upon you...

Tornadoes in dreams are fairly common. Usually when you have a dream where a tornado swiftly overtakes you, it is the mind's way of expressing chaos in your waking life. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it will often feel like life is spinning out of control, much like a tornado. These feelings will often hide in a dream.

Some factors that may cause a tornado dream are a personal schedule that is more hectic than usual. Also, changes in one's life where the outcome is unforeseeable such as a new job, a new relationship or impending childbirth can trigger dreams about tornadoes.

Tornadoes may also appear in dreams when it feels like you have no control over a certain situation. These feelings could also be influenced by someone else. For instance, if there is someone close in your life that is prone to mood swings or emotional outbursts, this could be causing you to feel like you have no control.

Something important to take notice of in your tornado dream is where you were at the time the tornado approached. This will help pinpoint what area of your life needs more focus. If you were home in the dream, this could signify feelings of chaos in your personal or family life. If you were at work, this probably pertains to your professional life. If the location in the dream was not familiar, this is probably a generalized feeling of chaos in your waking life.

Another piece of important information in addition to what happened in the tornado dream is how you felt emotionally. In the hectic world we live in, it is not uncommon to push down and bury emotions in our life. Dreams are often used as a way of allowing the mind to express what we can't or won't allow ourselves to feel while awake. By acknowledging these feelings that appear in the dream, it will enable you to better come to terms with emotions that need to be dealt with while you are awake.

The best person to analyze your dreams is you. Once you are armed with possible meanings, you can take those meanings and see how it applies to your life. By knowing and listening to what your dreams may be trying to tell you, you can have a better understanding of what areas in your life you need to focus more attention. If you often have dreams of tornadoes, it may be your mind's way of telling you it's time to stop, take a deep breath and relax.
