Analyzing and Interpreting Literature: Flower Net Chapters 21 Through 25

Decoding the Secrets Behind a Murder Mystery

John Galt
What does it mean to understand literature? Even though we encounter words and written language nearly every day of our lives, often times we do not stop to see the significance of the meaning behind those words. With that in mind, perhaps one of the best things that we can do for ourselves in terms of self education is to look closely at literature and attempt to decode it. Luckily, when we look at the genre of literature known as detective fiction, we are presented with many opportunities to engage our minds and sharpen our literary abilities. In order to aid in that sharpening, here are presented the analysis and summaries of the closing chapter of Lisa See's pivotal detective novel, Flower Net.

Chapter 21

After the events of chapter twenty, David and Hulan decide that they have to escape. David comes up with a plan, and the two begin to carry out the plan. Hulan secures some older clothes for David, and they dress him up to look like a Chinese citizen. They contact Beth Madsen, and taking a car and walking, the two make it to the airport. They fly to Chengdu, and the two find a hotel room for the night. Along the way to hiding, they realize how Genglai's body was smuggled out of the country. Even though chapter twenty one does not reveal a large amount of new information to the reader, it is pivotal because we learn about the future of Stark and Hulan. However, we cannot help but wonder if their new hiding place is really going to make them any safer, or if they ave played right into the danger that is followed them?

Chapter 22

After settling into the hotel, Sark and Hulan decide that the time has come to gather information and pursue the truth about what is going on. They rent a car and travel to the Panda Bear farm and reservation. However, they soon learn that illegal products are not manufactured at the farm. They approach one of the employees and learn the real location of the bear production. However, along the way they discover the location where Zai, Liu, and others were held in a prison camp. They discover how close it is to the bear farm and they wonder about the possible connections between the two. The chapters in the novel are getting shorter and shorter, and we can only wonder about the eventual conclusion. Also, something is sure to be made of the proximity of the bear farm to the prison camp. There may very well be a connection between the two places. However, only the future will tell us what will be in store for David and Hulan.

Chapter 23

David and Hulan find the bear farm and begin checking the location building by building. They enter one of the buildings and discover Hulan's father waiting for them with a gun in hand. The two engage in a discussion and Liu shoots David in the arm. Amidst the accusations and arguments, it becomes apparent that Hulan is not to blame for her mother's accident and what happened to her father. The two argue back and forth and eventually Zai comes to the window and grabs Liu by the throat long enough for Hulan to grab the gun. Although Liu is no longer a threat, we have to wonder what will happen to him in the following chapters.

Chapter 24

Chapter twenty four marks the real conclusion of the novel, with Liu killing himself and David being rushed to the hospital in order to survive. There really is not a lot to tell about chapter twenty four, and one can only wonder what the future holds for Stark and Hulan.

Chapter 25

At the conclusion of the novel, we see that everything has returned mostly to normal. The mystery is solved and we learn the truth about what happened that caused David and Hulan to work together to solve the murder mystery of the two boys. David is given a CD containing the names connected to the sale of the nuclear trigger components and he eventually returns to America to bust the remaining members of the Rising Phoenix. Hulan, on the other hand, has her mother and her nurse move in with her so that she can take better care of the two. However, at the end of the novel, we learn that Hulan is pregnant, so there can be no doubt that a sequel or two is on the way.

Although Flower Net received generally good reviews, "Dragon Bones" is considered to be some of the best of Lisa See's work.
