Anarchy

Can it Work?

It seems since the dawn of time there have been societies and governments even with in animal kingdoms. Always does it seem there is a form of leadership or authority telling us what is OK and what is not. Is it right to live your life under someone else's control? Should society have establishments controlling aspects of our day to day lives? How would you like to be your own governor, your own lord? Anarchy or lack of government seems like a great opportunity for freedom, but can it work? There are several sides to this argument and who can really say what the answer is? I would like to argue that as with anything it depends one the individual as well as one's perspective.

Humans are complex and each unique with there own personalities, ideas and values. The idea of right and wrong itself is entirely subjective. Anarchy may work for certain individuals, but would perhaps not be the best option for others. By nature we are social creatures and thus tend to congregate in groups living in cities, and interacting with each other on a day to day basis. With so many people in the world it is natural that conflict shall arise at some point in time.

Now if everyone in the world operated on the same wave length than perhaps even in groups anarchy may work, but the world simply does not work that way. Everybody sees things differently and wants different things. Some people want to destroy others, take control and even rule the world. If there is always someone wanting control than someone will always try to seize it thus creating a form of government it is simply unavoidable unless perhaps you did something drastic like killed everyone who thought a certain way and prohibited reproduction all together, but that would also be controlling others so would fail as well.

Another key point is that with in ourselves our own mind and body form a set of functions and we control ourself every day moving our limbs, talking, breathing and a million other simple tasks. This in it's own form is a government with in our body and if you look to this level the entire concept of anarchy is impossible.

Even the act of feeding is an act of control and thus government. When you eat a cow you have controlled that cow by killing it and even putting it into your mouth. If you argue that you are a vegetarian even the act of taking a plants life is an act of control. Survival is based upon a form of control, but that is not always a bad thing. With pure anarchy the world would be non existent leaving a blank void, an empty nothingness.

One aspect of anarchy that proves difficult for most is the ability to survive on your own. If you take out the deepest views of government such as our mind and the control of eating plants and animals leaving it simply to the idea of a human society that we are used to people simply rely on each other. People have always traded goods and services which in part creates a society. Few people can survive with out society or would not want to. Clothes we were, music we listen to, food we eat, and even the water we drink is often processed and brought to us from multiple sources. How many would be happy on there own creating there own survival? With out being entirely independent meaning making your own clothes, food, and every aspect of survival you cannot live in anything even close to anarchy. To ask for help from another defies anarchy.

Most anarchists simply want to live with out a supreme government which would be possible for many, but this would not be complete anarchy. Although there would not be a supreme government simply in socializing and coming together in groups would form a lot of small forms of government. The world would be more like small tribes and even a few would walk the world alone perhaps. Anarchy I don't believe is the right term for this as it gives many a false impression of what someone means and perhaps there should be another term used. It is difficult to understand anarchy if one doesn't understand the view of the individual because many definitions and uses are used with the word anarchy. Anarchy in itself can mean chaos and disorder or simply the lack of a sovereign government.

In many cases I believe that anarchy would eventually lead to a dictatorship as there will always be individuals who want power so through the lack of rule they would suppress the weak taking control by dominance. Some believe that the strong should rule living by the mentality of survival of the fittest, but personally I would rather live in a world where people work together and help each other or keep to themselves not harming others. I care about people that may be weaker than me and I would not wish someone to miss out on the opportunity of life because they simply aren't the strongest.

Don't get me wrong I am all for independence and individual strength. Once I even considered myself an anarchist, but to get to the most literal point anarchy cannot exist and it should not. People should perhaps learn to live together better, and if everyone was more respectful we may not need such an established government and I believe laws are often too restricting, but nature itself is a government. As long as everyone finds what works for them and does the best they can than that's all we can do. People are complex and simply clash at times so unfortunately it can prove difficult to live peacefully with out some sort of boundaries or guidelines to help things run smoothly. Government is neither good or bad it's what you make it.

  • Nature itself is a form of government.
  • Survival of the fittest.
  • Humans are complext and don't always think the same.
