Anchor Cindy Michaels is the Latest Sarah Palin Look-Alike

Robert Dougherty
Being a look-alike of Sarah Palin has done wonders for one woman on TV, but not so much for another. Cindy Michaels, an anchor for WVII and WFVX in Bangor, Maine, has been noticed to be looking like Sarah Palin in recent weeks. The reaction to Cindy Michaels looking like Sarah Palin is far different from the one Tina Fey got for looking like her as well. Fey got to impersonate Palin on SNL and get yet another wave of love from her fans and critics. Cindy Michaels, on the other hand, has tended to get viewer complaints and hate mail.

Cindy Michaels wears her hair pinned on top of her head, like Sarah Palin does. Cindy Michaels also tends to wear the same kind of now famous glasses that Palin and Fey do. For the last two weeks, viewers of Cindy Michaels and her news coverage have pointed out her resemblance to Sarah Palin, sometimes in not so friendly ways.

Michaels has said that people have been pointing out her resemblance to Palin since the day John McCain selected her as a running mate. The reactions range from friendly ribbing to e-mails and phone calls complaining about the look. Some voice mails left for Cindy Michaels have been downright mean.

One caller was reported to have said to Michaels that "you shouldn't be tarred with that brush." Another called Michaels "the K-Mart version of Sarah Palin." Other say she is just being vain and trying to emulate Palin, who isn't someone that some people want to have emulated. One writer on the Bangor Daily News website had a nice and backhanded comment, saying that Michaels "has something that Palin doesn't have: a conscience and a brain."

But Michaels has had this look long before 90% of the country ever heard of Sarah Palin. Michaels has been a journalist WVII in Maine for nine years, and has been a news anchor for two. Michaels has had this now famous look since the 1990's.

Despite the recurring negativity of the comparisons to Palin, Michaels has been enjoying the newfound spike in popularity. Inside Edition and The Ellen Degeneres Show want to talk to Michaels, and a Youtube video that puts Michaels and Palin side-by-side has been a big hit.

Michaels has also said that Palin is "an inspiration to women" which may just risk a few more negative comments from her anti-Palin fans.
