I found Andean Dream Quinoa Coconut Cookies one day while shopping. They seemed pretty unique since they were made with the grain quinoa, one of my favorite grains, instead of wheat or rice flours. It was the first time I had seen them and I figured they were worth trying out.
The cookies came in a box within a bag within individual bags. Inside the box was a plastic foil bag and within the bag that was within the box were cookies, individually wrapped cookies. Each cookie was wrapped in an individual clear plastic bag. Maybe it is just me but that seems awfully wasteful. I am all for portability but I think it would be better to let me decide which cookies I want to take with me and let me put just the ones I need in a plastic bag, especially since this time I ate all the cookies at home. If your anything like me and I know some of you are, but don't like to admit it, you tend to eat more than one cookie at a time. And if you are on the go you would prefer to take more than one cookie with you, which you can easily do by placing some in a little sealable snack bag. Having them individually wrapped just seem unnecessary. If they insist on individually wrapping them maybe they can switch to paper or something we can recycle.
Excess packaging aside these are really good cookies. No one would know or care that these are gluten free or vegan. The texture is similar to almond cookies. They are firm but light and crumbly, so be careful they might make a little mess. The coconut taste is light but noticeable. You really would not notice these are gluten free they are really good and the light airy texture is perfect.
I was kind of disappointed by how much I got for the price. I don't know why really. I am use to buying "specialty" cookies and getting little in quantity in return. The 7 ounce bag contained 12 cookies total. I know 12 does not seem like too little but the cookies are not really that big. I paid almost $5 for the one box. I calculated it and it comes to about .40 cents a cookie and .80 for one serving. For the size of the cookie, now that I did the math, I don't know if I would pay .40 cents for just one cookie. I really shouldn't have done the math because I really love these cookies but looking at the numbers can be ugly. It is best to forget the calculations and buy the cookies anyway, because they do taste great.
The serving size of Andean Dream Quinoa Coconut Cookies is 2 cookies and you might want to hope you will only eat 2 because they are 150 calories each serving of 2 and they have 8 grams of fat per serving. They are made with Royal quinoa so at least some of the calories are from a higher quality nutrition. Also the sugar is not bad for a cookie. It has only 4 grams per 2 cookies and 2 grams of protein.
As pricey as Andean Dream Quinoa Coconut Cookies are I would definitely buy them again and recommend them. However, they will probably not be my staple house cookies. They would fit more in the category of splurge, craving type of cookie.
Ingredients: Organic Royal Quinoa flour, tapioca flour, non- hydrogenated palm fruit oil, sugar cane juice, natural grated coconut, raw sugar, rice flour, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and natural vanilla extract.
