Andy Roddick vs. Tomas Berdych: Play-by-Play
The match appeared to be headed for a repeat of the Ljubicic final at Indian Wells, as both Roddick and Berdych continued to hold serve until 5 games all. Then, Berdych's first double-fault gave Roddick a break point which he was able to convert before going on to serve out the first set 7-5.
Andy Roddick's fans were complacent throughout the second set, as Roddick had been able to secure an early break in the opening game. Tomas Berdych's level, however, did not drop despite being a set and break down. He continued to hold serve throughout the match, even fighting off two championship points on his own serve.
Andy Roddick's service game, however, was untouchable, giving Berdych no openings to level the match.
Andy Roddick vs. Tomas Berdych: Match Analysis
Although both Andy and Tomas served well, it was the first serve that made the difference. According to the match statistics posted by Sony Ericsson, Roddick's first serve percentage was 62 compared to Berdych's 49. Roddick's return game was bolder because he was able to play off his opponent's second serve. Roddick delivered 13 aces compared to Berdych's 7.
Another factor in the match was Roddick's movement and footwork which were much improved from previous seasons. He seems to be playing with more freedom and confidence. Berdych didn't choke today by any means. If he could improve his first serve percentage and remain consistent, he has the caliber to compete with the best players in the world.
As for Andy Roddick, back-to-back finals at Indian Wells and Sony Ericsson, as well as the thrilling win over Nadal in the semis may give him the confidence to believe that he can win another slam. After that achingly close Wimbledon final against Federer last summer, nobody deserves another slam more than Roddick.
