Andy Roddick Strips for Charity

Andy Roddick is doing more than losing tennis matches. He lost his hair. Now he's losing his clothes, and, some would say, his sanity. Roddick went above and beyond his "civic duty" this past weekend at Elton John's 16th annual event at Kennesaw State University, where he joined other celebrities in an auctuion to raise money for those in the south affected by AIDS. Roddicks offer for a one hour private tennis lesson made no mention of nudity, but when bidding was a little less than inspired (kind of like Roddick's tennis performance lately), Andy offered to go shirt-less for the lesson. That got the fans attention. Bidding soared to $11,000, but when one over-excited fan screamed "take it all off," Andy agreed to conduct said lesson in the buff. One lucky female fan ponied up $15,000 for the chance to see Andy's "tennis balls." He should be counting his lucky stars that the winning bid came from a woman, not a man. All things, including Andy's playful personailty, considered, I don't see him actually bearing it all on court. However, since he did agree, and that is what she paid for, if he doesn't we may actually see him IN court. Oh, to be a fly on the wall of that courtroom. Perhaps he should exercise better judgment skills. So while Andy is selling himself and his dignity on the auction block, his long time rival Roger Federer would rather put his money in a buying a new mattress. Is everyone in the tennis world drunk? All I can say is, if I paid $15,000 for a naked Andy Roddick, you better believe we would not be playing tennis.

Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn't wait to get to work in the morning: I wanted to know what I was going to say. ~Sharon O'Brien  View profile
