Angel Food Ministries Seeing Fewer Orders

Where's the Beef?

JTA Knowles
Angel Food Ministries, non-profit organization that supplies food at a discount to low-income people, has had, of late, minimal success due to decreased orders., according to some Texas media. Unfortunately, if you compare each item from Angel Food Ministries with the cost at a local grocery store and add it up, you will very frequently find that you are not saving any money. The only items that are normally at a lower price with Angel Food Ministries are chicken and desserts -- usually pies.

The rest of the regular items are not helping lower costs. Also, you can only order at a certain time during the month from Angel Food Ministries, and then you have to wait about another month before your order comes in, which you pick up at the participating church. You have to pay with cash, too.

Angel Food Ministries is very strict in their rules for you to order their monthly items. I have tried their services in the Sherman/Denison area of Texas, and it definitely fell short of my expectations.

I have not tried their specialty meat orders, so I can't say for certain that those items would or would not save you money. The Web site is angelfoodministries.org, but it has become very hard to navigate. You use to be able to click on menus, and it would show the menu for that month and any specialty meat orders available. It doesn't do that now, it just shows other links and redirects you away from their website.

Fortunately, in Sherman/Denison, Texas, they post their monthly order in our local paper, The Shopper, and they list the deadlines to purchase and a phone number to contact the church in your area that is participating. I would recommend that you do the math by comparing their prices with your local grocery store prices and make a decision on whether or not it would be beneficial to your budget. Good luck and I hope I have helped enlighten people on this particular charity.

I am sorry, but your article does not offer any enlightenment - no facts, no concrete examples, and what "facts" you do offer have no bearing on reality. You may want to check your notes again about your personal experience with Angel Food. What exactly were your expectations, and how exactly did Angel Food fail to meet them? Your description of the ordering process does not even match with the reality of ordering, whether today, in 2009, or in 2008, when you wrote this article. You make these broad statements about the food program not offering any savings, but you offer nothing to back that up. What is really regrettable is that you might influence people who could really benefit from Angel Food to turn their backs on the program. Angel Food Ministries is a very good option for folks who need to reduce their grocery bills, and far from being the waste of time that you imply it is, the program is easy to access, easy to order, easy to obtain. Perhaps next time, as you attempt to

For the second time, this is how they do things here in Grayson County, Texas. I DO NOT know why, but that's just how it is. I wish it were otherwise, but it's not.

We get the angel food ministries in Galax, VA and it is nothing like you described. The food is wonderful and is about half price from what it costs at a local grocery store. We order one week and receive our food the next week. Praise goes to Angel Food Ministries for helpin families in our area.
