Angelina Jolie Aids the Cause of Orphans Worldwide

Angelina Jolie has added her name to another international humanitarian effort. Yesterday the Oscar winning actress announced the launch of Global Action for Children (GAC) at the Washington Press Club

"I am here to simply ask you to think about orphaned children not as a burden but as a great opportunity," Jolie said at a press conference. "Their education is an investment in our future. ... They have had to work very, very hard to survive, but when they are given a chance, they grow strong, stronger than most. ... The Lost Boys of Sudan are a great example."

Lost Boys of Sudan is a term used to describe Sudanese boys orphaned as a result of civil war. Jolie's partner, Brad Pitt, also produced a recent documentary on the subject which has the same name.

A press release regarding the event stated, "GAC is a nonpartisan advocacy organization focused on increasing funding by $2.5 billion per year by the US government for programs that support orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and provide free primary school education in developing countries."

Before the announcement, Jolie met with top level State Department officials including Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Dina Powell and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes.

Jennifer Delaney, HAC executive director, attended the meeting with Jolie.

"It went very well. We talked about how there is such a growing need to help children around the world. We talked a great deal about universal education and orphans and vulnerable children, so I do think there's some receptiveness there to this issue."

Jolie's own three adopted children prompted her to support the organization. "I feel very fortunate to have orphan children in my home."

Pitt and Jolie have four children. Pax a 3-year-old boy from Vietnam, 5-year-old son, Maddox, from Cambodia, 2-year-old daughter, Zahara, from Ethiopia and Shiloh, born to the couple last May.

According to HAC there will be 20 million AIDS orphans worldwide by 2010. Millions more will be orphaned by other preventable diseases such as tuberculous and malaria.

Last year Pitt and Jolie gave $1 million to HAC and started the Pitt-Jolie Foundation. Jolie is currently the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency.

Jolie laughed off any plans to run for office. "I certainly don't think anybody wants that."

I think it is wonderful for celebrities and the more fortunate people of the world to help children in need; however, I feel the children of the USA would be just as appreciative and we have so many that live in poverty. I personally sponsor 2 Native American children that live in the state of Arizona with NO plumbing and NO electricity. To the Brad and Angelinas...why not help our own???

It is nice that the people who have the money are trying to help these children. It costs so much to adopt children from other countries. It is really too expensive for the ordinary person to ever be able to do. It's too bad, too. If the government would help on the costs, I am sure more people would adopt a child from any land.

Great article. It is good that this money is being spread to where it is needed.

I love it when people in a position of power use it this way.

Its great to know that some actors and actresses choose to use their money for good causes, instead of useless material goods that they discard after one use. Great article!
