Angelina Jolie's Celebrity Makes it Easy for Her to Be a Humanitarian

Compassion Can Start at Home, as Well as Abroad

Angelina Jolie is, unarguably, a beautiful woman with a passion for helping those less fortunate. I do not begrudge her work, or her heart, but I do take issue with the attention bestowed upon her as though what she does is worthy of great praise when there are many people who do so much more, but without the means and recognition that Angelina Jolie receives.

Angelina Jolie's station in life, along with her vast wealth and support, makes it easy for her to be generous. Her celebrity gives her recognition and along with that are the accolades.

I do believe that Angelina Jolie is sincere in wanting to help people and that she does bring about good in the world, but is what she does more important than what someone else does, but without the assets and support that Ms. Jolie has?

Something else that irritates me is the praise she receives for adopting, as if what she does is out of the norm.

I was adopted at the age of two and a half, so I commend anyone who wants to open their hearts and homes to children that are not biologically their own. With that said, Ms. Jolie is not a saint for doing so.

Ms. Jolie, again, is assisted in her endeavors, has money to make the transition easy, and has several nannies. There are so many wonderful families who sacrifice a lot to make an adoption possible and they receive none of the outside rewards or help that Angelina Jolie does.

I also wish that when Angelina Jolie raises awareness to the situations children in the world face, she would not forget the children in her own country--The United States. There are thousands of children waiting to be adopted in this country every year - older children - ones of different ethnicities that few people seem to want.

Are these children not as deserving as the ones Angelina Jolie wants to save?

I just wish that while attempting to save the world, celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, wouldn't forget the ones so close to home.

My husband narrowly missed meeting Angelina Jolie when she visited Iraq in February 2008. While soldiers may have felt lucky to meet her, I think the beautiful Ms. Jolie was lucky to meet them.

Kelly m, the content of your comment is one of the points I was making when writing this opinion piece. Oh yes, it's "so tough" for Angelina Jolie to be a high profile humanitarian. Actually, there are many more people who sacrifice a lot to be humanitarians (or adoptive parents) and do so without the accolades, support and lavish praise that Angelina Jolie receives. That is the point. However, as far as celebrities go, I do like Angelina Jolie, but I'm not 'a fan' who thinks she can do no wrong.

It's tough to be a high profile humanitarian. This woman uses her time and her money to help mankind and she is mindful that she lives in a wealthy, free country, so draws attention to the voiceless. And we see that as a bad thing? Yes, there are people here in need - but we also have social mechanisms to help and we have among the highest rates of adoption in the world. We live in a country where people can buy other people's uteruses to harvest their children - so anyone who adopts children, regardless of the nationality of those children - is one less person supporting the notion that with money you can buy the perfect child. Kudos to Miss Jolie. She could be out in bars or in and out of rehab, but she spend her free time with her family or helping build up the family worldwide...

Great piece. I can't stand Angelina Jolie. I'm not sure how good her intentions really are, nor would I call her actions self-less. Kids are wonderful. There are many folks who would choose to adopt if they had the funds and nannies. She gets just as much out of adopting children as they do from being adopted. I think if you have millions (acquired from something as ridiculous as acting in stupid films), it is your DUTY to do something useful with your cash.
