Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory and Gourmet Cafe in Daytona Beach, Florida

Handcrafted Chocolates, Snack Candy, Sugar-Free Treats and Gourmet Dining

Kathy Browning
Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory has provided decadent handcrafted chocolates to Daytona Beach residents and tourists since 1925. An icon in the community, Angell and Phelps is the brainchild of Riddell Angell and Cora Phelps. These entrepreneurial women managed to brave the elements of salty air and high humidity while making their delicate creations in a store with no air conditioning.

Angell and Phelps is now owned by Charles Smith who expanded the business in 1999 to include a gourmet café. It's one of the few places in town where you can have your cake and eat it too! The chocolate factory and restaurant are centrally located on Beach Street in downtown Daytona; making it easy to incorporate into sightseeing activities when visiting the area.

The Angell and Phelps Café offers casual gourmet dining. Lunch is served Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Dinner is served Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. During dinner services, local musicians provide live entertainment consisting of southern soulful blues, soft rock, jazz, pop, and classic country.

For lunch, visitors can indulge in homemade soups and salads, hot sandwiches, deli sandwiches and wraps, and hot lunch platters including Angell and Phelps veal meatloaf burger or open face roast beef sandwich slathered in mushroom demi glace with a side of mashed potatoes. Be certain to save room for desserts which include a sinfully-rich chocolate lava cake, apple Dutch cheesecake, or Tiramisu.

Angell and Phelps dinner menu rivals most 5-star restaurants, but guests can dine for a fraction of the cost. Entrées include fork-tender filet mignon, juicy sirloins, key lime salmon, black jack mahi mahi, and a variety of poultry dishes such as chicken Marsala and Greek stuffed chicken breast.

Guests who prefer a lighter meal will appreciate Angell and Phelps selection of dinner salads, homemade soups, and dinner sandwiches such as the classic French Dip, Reuben, and robust Monte Carlo consisting of ham, turkey and Swiss cheese layered between three slices of French toast dusted with powdered sugar and served with raspberry dipping sauce.

Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory in Daytona Beach, Florida

A visit to Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory is reminiscent of the movie, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The moment you enter the storefront the aroma of chocolate fills your nostrils and you suddenly feel as if you are a child again. Your eyes begin to dart around the showroom floor as a feeling of giddiness envelopes your body. With so many chocolate choices it is hard to know where to begin.

The left side of the showroom is packed with wall displays and tables overflowing with packages of chocolate covered pretzels, raisins, Jordan almonds, espresso beans, cranberries, nuts, and potato chips. Yes, I said chocolate covered potato chips. If you've never tried them, you must. The salty crispness of the chip combined with the sweetness of chocolate provides a flavor profile like no other. However, be forewarned. The Lays potato chips slogan of, "Bet You Can't Eat Just One" holds true for Angell and Phelps chocolate covered potato chips!

The right side of Angell and Phelps showroom offers an abundance of unique moulded chocolates such as gators, conch shells, sea shells, golf balls, roses, tackle boxes, cell phones, and computers. An entire section is devoted to Daytona Beach chocolate gift souvenirs including an amazing one-pound beach assortment gift box consisting of chocolate sea shells, starfish, sea turtles, and saltwater taffy. Other chocolate souvenir selections include chocolate dolphin suckers, sailboats, flip flop sandals, palm trees and sand dollars.

The center section of Angell and Phelps showcases a multitude of individual chocolates which can be purchased by the piece or in one-half to two pound boxes. The left side of the display showcases a variety of dark chocolate candies, while the right side is dedicated to milk chocolates. Visitors can create a personalized box of their favorite confections.

Angell and Phelps offers over 80 different types of chocolates including a variety of chocolate covered nuts, cream filled chocolates, chewy chocolate caramels, butter crunch toffee with chocolate and almonds, and their famous Honeybees; a combination of caramel and pecans enrobed in dark or milk chocolate.

Angell and Phelps also offers an assortment of homemade gourmet fudge including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, maple walnut, orange cream, chocolate mint, rocky road, peanut butter, cookies-n-cream, praline, vanilla chocolate swirl, chocolate peanut caramel, chocolate peanut butter, and chocolate walnut. Fudge is sold in one-quarter pound blocks for $4 and worth every penny!
