Who isn't fascinated by movies with angels in them? Angels have been a favorite of Hollywood since the beginning of film making. Angels have brought hope, whimsy, and heavenly possibilities to movies going audiences for decades.
  1. "Topper." (1937)
A couple full of life, George (Cary Grant) and Marion Kerby (Constance Bennet), are suddenly killed in a car accident come back to haunt Cosmo Topper (Roland Young) and shake up his world. Billie Burke is at her best as Mrs. Clara Topper. Wonderful physical comedy and situations.
  2. "A Christmas Carol." (1938)
The classic Charles Dickens Christmas tales of the miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve that change his life forever. Starring Reginald Owen, Gene Lockhart, Ann Rutherford, and Leo G. Carroll.
  3. "Heaven Can Wait." (1943)
Narrated by the main character Henry Van Cleve (Don Ameche) who must defend his life at the gates of hell to the devil. Endearing story about a spoiled rascal turned womanizer, and later a gentleman. Charles Coburn is charming as Grandpa Hugo Van Cleve and Gene Tierney as Martha, Henry's lovely wife.
  4. "It's a Wonderful Life." (1946)
A classic Christmas movie starring James Steward as George Bailey, a young man running the family savings and loan company during the depression era, Donna Reed as Mary Hatch, George's wife, Lionel Barrymore as Henry F. Potter, the meanest man in town, and Henry Travers as the angel Clarence. A desperate George is visited by an Angel named Clarence who shows him how terrible life would be for his family and the entire town had George had never lived.
  5. "The Bishop's Wife." (1947)
The most distinguished angel on film was Dudley played by Cary Grant in this charming tale of an angel sent to help Bishop Henry Brougham (David Niven) after he prayed for guidance. The lovely Loretta Young plays Julia Brougham, the faithful but lonely Bishop's wife. The Bishop begins to receive guidance as he watches Dudley taking his place with Julia.
  6. "Angels in the Outfield." (1951)
The 1951 version of this film is without a doubt the best. Paul Douglas plays Aloysius X. 'Guffy' McGovern, the foul mouthed bullying coach of the Pirates in a losing season. Janet Leigh is reporter Jennifer Paige and Donna Corcoran is Bridget White, the orphan who sees the angels on the baseball diamond. Spring Byington is gentle and funny as Sister Edwitha. Great fun.
  7. "Wings of Desire." (1987)
Two heavenly spirit post war caretakers of humanity care for the lonely souls they encounter until one of the angels falls in love with a mortal and desires to be human. Starring Bruno Ganz and Damiel, Solveig Dommartin as Marion, and Otto Sander as Cassiel. Great performance by Peter Falk as Der Filmstar.
  8. "Always." (1989)
Pete Sandich's (Richard Dreyfuss) "number is up" and he dies when his firefighter plane explodes after saving the life of his friend Al Yackey (John Goodman). Pete's greeting angel Hap (Audrey Hepburn) tasks his with returning to earth to help the woman he loved Dorinda (Holly Hunter) who has not recovered from his death. This is one of Goodman's best performances.
  9. "Michael." (1996)
John Travolta is hilarious as the sugar eating, pie devoted, and battle loving womanizing angel Michael. Two reporters, Dorothy Winters (Andie MacDowell) and Frank Quinlan (William Hurt), find more than Michael when they chase down a story that an Archangel has returned to earth and is living in a motel with an old woman. Best Travolta ever.
  10. "City of Angels." (1998)
Based on the story Wings of Desire, City of Angels is the story of an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) who develops a relationship after making himself visible to Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan). Seth takes the leap into becoming mortal to be with Maggie.
