#1 - I Am Sam
I Am Sam is a movie about a father, who is mentally challenge, and tries his hardest to keep custody of his 7 year old dauther. Dakota Fanning, who also stars in this year's 'Push', plays a loving daughter who tries to protect her father, played by Sean Penn, from the outside world. Not only does she realize her father is different from other fathers, she also realizes that she is becoming smarter than her father. After an incident at school, children services get involved, and eventually take Sam's daughter from him. Through his attorney, Michelle Pfeifer, who also has family trouble with her son, works for Sam on a Pro Bono basis, and works with the court to fight for custody of his daughter. After months and months of hard work, and many memorable lessons that were made, he
.gains a network of friends that helps and supports him. This is a must see movie.
#2 - The Pursuit of Happyness
The Pursuit of Happiness is a true story about a father, Chris Garner, played by Will Smith, who has a dream to make it big in life no matter what struggles lay ahead of him. After his wife, played by Thandie Newton, leaves him to go to New York, he takes his son Chris Jr, played by Jaden Smith, Will Smith's real life son, to go on his life journey together, selling x-ray machines to doctors and hospitals to survive. After many nights of staying in motel rooms, bathrooms, buses, and homeless shelters, Chris finally achieves his goal by becoming a stock broker. This is a beautiful realistic film about the struggles of a parent trying to be successful through many failures, and comes out a champion in the eyes of their children.
#3 - The Notebook
The Notebook is a dramatic story about Duke, played by James Garner, who's wife Allie, played by Gena Rowlands, has Alzheimer's Disease, and does not remember him or her family. Each time Duke visits his wife at her hopital room, he tells her a story about two young people who were madly in love. Allie loves the story, and sometimes thinks she knows who he is talking about. Every time he visits, he has to reassure her that he is a friend. He too becomes ill, and begins staying in the same facility as her. In one of her moments of remembering, they have a touching reunion, that only hurts Duke more. Such a moving movie about a married couple that stay together through lifes toughest moments. A must see film.
#4 - The Bucket List
The Bucket list is a story about two men, Edward, played by Jack Nicholson, and Carter, played by Morgan Freeman who are diagnosed with a terminally ill disease. Morgan Freeman is the narrator of the film, and we see their story in the eyes of Carter. Edward is the owner of the hospital that they both end up sharing a room at. Carter comes up with a list, called the bucket list, that lists all the things he wanted to do before he died. They both decide to achieve all the goals on the list together. As they both achieve these goals, they build a friendship, and both learn the best lessons in life, as they are dying. A great movie about friendship.
#5 - Pay It Forward
Pay It Forward is a story about a young boy named Trevor McKinney, played by Haley Joel Osment, that is instructed by his teacher, played by Kevin Spacey, to think of a life changing project for the school year. He had a math theory, which started with one person and ended with more than 4 million people in two weeks. It was called pay it forward. Haley sets out to prove that if one person helped another, than that person should help three people. As Trevor sets out to prove his theory, he helps his teacher, a school friend, and a drug addict. Through all of his paying forwards, he also deals with an alcoholic mother, played by Helen Hunt, whose boyfriend, played by Jon Bon Jovi, abuses her. This is a very heart wrenching story, and can make any one cry. .
