Anger at Work - Positive and Negative Anger

Kevin Nurmi
Like all emotions, anger has its place in this world. But knowing the how's and when's to use anger is more important then just allowing this emotion to boil over and become destructive. Using anger in a positive way can do many things, such as change other negative behavior, inspire others to stand and fight against injustices. And the use of positive anger can make a person to be an advocate for others.

Before a person can use anger in a positive way one must understand what negative anger can do. Negative anger can affect a person not only mentally, but it can affect a person physically as well. Anger turned inward can lead to high blood pressure, ulcers, migraines, and even heart attacks. Negative anger turned outward can lead to what we see everyday on the news. Road rage, homicide, assaults of all types, and abuse not only physical abuse, but emotional and mental abuse as well.

While negative anger brings nothing good to anything or anyone, using anger in a positive way can do many things. Anger at being abused can help stop the abuse. Standing up for yourself and stopping the abusive behavior. Positive anger can give you the strength to act. By acting it will make others act as well.

Another way to make anger work is being an advocate for others, who can't fight for themselves. We see it everyday whether it is a family member, a neighbor, a friend, or even a stranger. By using positive anger you can inspire the person to act for themselves. It can also help that person to find the resources needed to help them out of whatever situation they are going through.

Positive anger can also be used to fight injustice. In society today we are constantly being showed through the media injustices that are happening in this world. We become angry about what we see, and through that anger we also act. Whether it is joining a group to stand against the injustice, organizing functions, rallies, or starting protesting to whatever the injustice is. Through the positive anger we then become part of the solution process.

It has been said that anger has no place in society, but that saying is wrong. Negative anger has no place and only leads to more negative acts, while positive anger can lead to change whether it is great or small. Anger can inspire, affect change and in turn makes the one who acts a part of the solution and not part of the problem.
