Angola, Indiana: Pokagon State Park and the Potawatomi Inn

Vicki Messer
Several years ago, while still residents of the state of Indiana, our family of four took a trip to Angola for a holiday weekend. We had reservations at the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park and planned to spend only one night there before going off to visit several other attractions in northern Indiana.

We were very pleased with our room accommodations and with the entire Inn. Each room in the Inn is richly decorated in a very casual and relaxing country style. Everything from the dining room to the library was cozy and comfortable.

Rooms come in a variety shapes and sizes, including one Double Bed or a Double Double Bed, one Queen Bed or a Queen Queen Bed, as well as Patio Rooms, Historic Cabins, Cabin Suites and Inn Suites.

It proved to be a wonderful place to spend our first day and night on our weekend adventure. The food was also exceptional and relatively inexpensive. Each meal offered a variety of food choices that would please anyone's palate.

After a full night's rest, we were up early and did some exploring of the Nature Center as well as some of the trails of Pokagon State Park. We also checked out the Toboggan Run which offers more than 1700 feet of refrigerated toboggan tracks for year-round enjoyment! There is also a bike trail that connects the Inn, the Campgrounds, Nature Center, and Saddle Barn. The bike trail is slightly more than 1 1/2 miles in length. The stables offer horseback riding as well as pony rides for the younger kids.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Pokagon State Park and our stay at the Potawatomi Inn. However, we had a few problems shortly after leaving the Inn on Sunday afternoon.

We had traveled only a few miles from Pokagon when our car broke down. I mean it literally "broke" down! Our back axle broke which caused our right back tire to rest at a very awkward angle. We sat on the side of the road for only a short time before we were able to get our car towed to a repair shop, but the owner of the shop told us that because it was a holiday weekend, no one would be available to repair our vehicle until Tuesday! He offered to drive our family back to the Potawatomi Inn where we spent the rest of our Holiday Weekend. It wasn't a bad place to be "trapped", even though we never made it to the the other sites we planned to visit that weekend. We spent a lot of good, quality, family time at Potawatomi Inn and continued to explore Pokagon State Park.

To provide you with a little history, Pokagon State Park and The Potawatomi Inn had their beginnings with 580 acres of land that was donated as a Christmas gift from the residents of Steuben County to the State of Indiana. According to information provided on their website, "The park presently has 1,260 acres of woods and shoreline. People come from all over the Midwest to enjoy the park and recreational activities offered all four seasons of the year."

For many years when our family was young, we vacationed at Pokagon every year. Time passes, and now the three children and their families want to return for a few days. We require 4 rooms or cabins, or whatever is available. Please respond with possibilities for next summer. Thanks.
