Angry Ron Paul Supporter

A. James
I've been reading some of the not so flattering Ron Paul articles on media outlets. I've heard talking heads on mainstream media denounce Ron Paul and his supporters. It seems many in the media have tried, unsuccessfully in my opinion, to peg Ron Paul and his supporters as liberals, nuts, misguided, extremists, anti-American, etc.

How sad for all conservatives- with the current state of affairs there is no way the Republicans will win the next Presidential election. What you are failing to see is that many of us ARE conservatives and are inflamed when such accusations are made. As a registered Republican I've voted for Bush, twice. I believe in small government, freedom in education for our young, lower taxes, personal property, the second amendment, repealing Roe v. Wade, etc.

I'm not alone. I've worked local Ron Paul booths. Inevitably, we do have some on the left join us but they are mostly like myself. As for the lefties, I'm okay with that and welcome them. I see it as a good thing for America to have a candidate who unites people of different beliefs and values. We have enough division already and I don't see it getting any better under the leadership of any other candidate. Is there another candidate people from different political ideologies unite behind? I haven't seen one yet but maybe I've missed something?

Under Bush, our rights have been eroding. Our standard of living has gone down. The price of gas alone has had a huge impact on our monthly spending and we were not "well off" before. The tax cuts DID help, and I thank Bush for them. However, I question whether they have been offset by inflation which is nowhere near under control. Everyday Americans like me are the ones most affected. Yet when I hear the Republican debates the front runners seem to think the economy is doing great. Try living on our paychecks and see how well it is going.

People like me are sick of watching government grow under a "conservative" administration. We don't want our rights being questioned or disappearing. We don't want our government issuing national id cards or creating a North American Union without our knowledge or consent (remember "we the people"?). We don't believe the government has the right to keep surveillance on American citizens and we believe we can be safe while securing our freedoms. How much of the Constitution does this administration have to violate before American wakes up to this?

We don't trust a government who is gung ho to fight a war to protect us from terrorists while doing little to physically secure our own country. Our border is open. What has this administration done to fix the immigration mess that allowed people to live here on expired visas so they could fly planes into our buildings? Yet they are keeping us safe by fighting a war in the Middle East some 6,000 miles away?

I have lost faith in this administration, in our party itself. I have no more faith in the other party and strongly oppose their social platforms. So for people like me, stuck in the middle, we are going for the candidate who doesn't ooze corruption. We want a candidate who is consistent and walks the walk. We need someone who exhibits character, not suddenly becomes pro-life or pro gun rights. Speaking for myself, if I'm not presented with such a candidate I won't be voting at all. I don't think I'm alone gathering what I know of the many Ron Paul supporters I've met in life and online. Regardless of political affiliation we seem to share that sentiment- disagree if you want but there it is and it's how we feel. That is why Republicans will lose. They are going to lose and continue losing a large enough voting block of their base because they refuse to hold themselves to a higher standard. Republicans can no longer count on votes from us. We are making a stand and many of us have decided that we will vote our hearts or not at all, not between what we perceive to be the lesser of two evils.

So please continue making fun of us. Be sure to slant your media coverage of Ron Paul to always include a jab or two. You may succeed at keeping the die hard Republicans amused at your wittiness, but you are further alienating a voting block desperately needed to win the next Presidential election. Feel free to pat yourselves on the back in November of 2008 when Hillary Clinton is celebrating her achievement as the first female President of the United States.
