Animal Insomnia: Help Your Pet Sleep Better

Erika V. Cox
Like people, some pets have difficulty going to sleep. However, most pets don't have any problems sleeping. Dogs sleep or dose off at least half the day and cats spend more than 18 hours snoozing. But if your pet is suddenly suffering from the sleeplessness syndrome, here are a few things you can do. First, a lack of a good night's sleep could be due to uncomfortable sleeping quarters.

Your pet, like yourself, can lose sleep if the bedding is not conducive to getting a good night's rest. Since most pets sleep on the floor you should make it as comfortable as possible for them. Although pets can sleep on bare floors since they sleep on the ground, you can still provide them with a nice comfortable blanket or large pillow for them to sleep on. Pet stores and many other discount stores have pet beds that can make sleeping more comfortable and cozy for your pet.

Young and older pets are more likely to have to use the bathroom often and this may prevent them from getting a good night's sleep. Let your pet outside to relieve himself before bed time or make sure your cat's litter box is close to him. If your pet is very young, make sure you give them enough space to sleep and to use the bathroom. Pets don't like to sleep anywhere near where they go to the bathroom. If they are not given enough room to sleep and to move away to use the bathroom, this may cause them to have an uncomfortable night's sleep.

Try giving your pet enough exercise or play time throughout the day so when it's time to go to sleep they are ready. Next, a sore body can keep anyone from getting enough sleep, if you have an older pet who is suffering from sore muscles be sure to give them a nice massage before bedtime. Some pets are afraid of the dark for some unknown reason, or, if they are older may be losing their sight so the darkness makes them uncomfortable. If this is the case, leave on a small nightlight to help comfort your pet. You can also try some smooth music it may help your pet sleep better also.

If visitors stay over night, your pet may feel left out and have trouble sleeping. If this is the case, try a temporary sleeping arrangement that is closer to everyone so your pet sleeps better. You can also spend some extra playtime with your pet before bedtime so they won't feel left out. Some pets need their own space. If your pet is overweight and is suffering from insomnia, take him to the vet to get checked out and to receive medication for their condition.
