Animal Rescue - A Commitment for Life

Mary Pagay
People can help to "rescue" animals in countless different ways, believe it or not. Rescuing animals does not only have to mean running through a raging fire to saving a trapped pet. It can also mean abiding by and promoting rules to help animals - pets and wildlife - live a safer life, protected from potential harm, in the environment that they call "home".

First, you need to make a commitment to yourself and to the animals you hope to protect. That commitment needs to be strong so that it will not falter and it will serve as the foundation for the strength that you will need in order to follow through.

Once that commitment is firmly set in your mind and soul, you can then proceed to the next step. What is the next step? Well, that can take many forms.

One way to get your feet wet in the animal "rescue" scene is to join an animal or wildlife group such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), or the SPCA (Society for the Protection and Care of Animals). There are countless other societies as well. Google the type of animal rescue society you are interested in and you will find a number and variety to choose from. For instance, if you want to work with wildlife, check the combination wildlife and conservation or animal protection. You get the point. These organizations do wonderful things for animals (pets and wildlife) not only in this country, but throughout the world. Your involvement with them can be as simple as making a donation and knowing in your heart that you have played a part in saving the lives of innocent animals everywhere or actually getting involved physically (they will have more information on how to do so on their web sites).

Another way to rescue animals is to have the mind set of adopting animals who are in need of a good home (rather than buying a pet from a pet store or a breeder). There are thousands of pets (of all kinds) who need loving care. They need an angel. And, if you can be their angel, then you have done a great part in the rescue effort for animals on this planet.

Still another contribution to the rescue effort is to HAVE YOUR PETS NEUTERED OR SPAYED. There are too many unwanted animals out there allowed to breed and their offspring are unwanted, uncared for, and often left to die or are euthanized.

Doing volunteer service at a local shelter does a great deal for animals in need of love and help. Even if just for the moment, to pet an animal that has no home and no love given to him or her, and to make that animal's heart happy even for a moment, does a great deal in the rescue effort to protect and care for animals in need.

Wanting to help animals is a wonderful goal and is certainly much needed. Now, you need to set the plan in motion by firming up your commitment for the strength that I mentioned before that will be needed to follow through. "Why would I need strength" you ask? Because when the time comes that you know you have done all you can and still it was not enough because not enough people have the heart you do to do their share in the effort, or they just don't give a damn, you will be able to know in your heart that you have given a ray of sunshine - even if just for a moment - to those unfortunate animals who fall through the cracks.
