Animal Rights & the 'Code of Cruelty' Campaign

Implication in Social Reform

Christine Cadena
In the United States, there is a growing push to modify and improve animal rights. With many animal rights activists assuming specific grassroots efforts, there are those who are involved, heavily in legislation reform.

Looking to Australia, many animal rights activists in the United States, consider the Australians a perfect example of a country that shows interest in protecting the welfare of animals. Seeking to mimic some of the Australian legislative processes, many animal rights activists are quick to use global animal rights efforts as a just reason for their cause.

As in the United States, however, Australians do not necessarily protect the rights of animals in terms of slaughter and animal farming. For this reason, animal rights activists in the United States must create their own platform on which to evoke change.

In the United States, as in other countries such as Australia, there is a growing concern over the issues involving cruelty to animals. While we do carry animal welfare legislation, there are many animal farming industries that are exempt from these pieces of legislation. Be exempting these specific animal farming industries, the animals raised for slaughter are continually subjected to cruel punishment. In Australia, the animal rights activists use the term 'code of cruelty' to describe this phenomenon; the term has taken on new force in the United States as well.

The concept of cruelty to animals has been such an overwhelming platform in Australia, which many animal rights activists, around the world, are now considering the creation of a global effort known as the "Codes of Cruelty" in which cruelty treatment to animals will be exposed around the world. Through collaborative efforts, many animal rights activists groups believe there can be a movement of change within each country affected.

While many countries continue to consume animal by-products as a significant staple of food consumption, it is highly doubtful that the full liberation of all animals will occur during our lifetime. However, by expanding the "Codes of Cruelty" campaign outside of Australia, many American animal rights activists hope to, at least, gain recognition for addition legislation and tighter control over the humane treatment of animals.

Without regard to your position on animal rights, there is no doubt you have been exposed to the debate on slaughter houses and the cruelty to animals. With changes in political campaigns and platforms, many grassroots organizations are looking to government to support the changes that are successfully working in other countries. In an effort to bring awareness to the subject matter, you can expect to see and hear more about the "Codes of Cruelty" campaign, very soon, in the United States.
