Keep Your Eyes Open
No matter what time of day it is, always keep an eye on the road, and use your peripheral vision to scope out the sidelines of the it too. If you see an animal on the side of the road, slow down as you pass them. They can be spontaneous and run out in front of you at any given moment.
Spring and Summer Time
During the spring and summer months, animals are on the hunt for a mate and food. So that means they are going to be everywhere. During the winter, deer is the biggest problem in Ohio. My mother always said, "if there is one there is two, and if there is two, there is three". So if you do see a deer, always go very slow, because if one jumped out in front of you, the best chance is that there will be another.
Drought Times
If your state is having a drought season, it is very likely that you will see many animals on the wrong crossing to find water and food. Make sure you keep an eye out during this time.
Dense Woods
Since animals frequent wooded areas, traveling past dense woods can be dangerous. Keep your speed to a minimum, especially when the dense woods are on both sides of the road.
Open Fields
Open fields are frequented by animals for grazing, finding food, and searching for water. When you are passing open areas, especially at night, make sure you look on both sides of the field for any animals that could potentially cross the road about the time you get there. Make sure you can see at a distance, because they could pop up at any time.
Speed
Do not speed, especially when you are traveling through any of the areas explained above. Speeding does not give you ample time to slow down if an animal decides to cross your path. Always keep your speed at the allowable speed, and watch for signs that say anything about animals. This is a clear sign that you should slow down.
