Big cats are found all over the world expect in the Polar Regions and in Australia. Lions and tigers are bib cats. The lion, with his magnificent mane is called the king of the jungle because his mighty roar frightens all the other animals. He is very powerful and swift in this attack. But the lion is also very lazy. He goes hunting for food only when he is hungry or when his lioness needs food for her cubs! The tiger is one of the few cats that can swim and he often springs into a river to save his life when he is being hunted by men. Mother tigress teaches her cubs to play-and seek among the undergrowth, so that they will be safe from hunters.
Far away in South Africa are found elephants, antelopes, zebras and ostriches. Elephants are also found in India. The elephant and the antelope are grateful to a little bird called egret. The egret helps its animal friends by eating the tiny insects which are hidden in their sin. The ostrich stays closes to the zebra to warn the poor-sighted zebra when there is any danger about. The zebra returns this good deed by warning the ostrich when he hears or smells danger!
The camel is called `the ship of the desert'. He can carry heavy goods for many kilometers over the lot desert without stopping to rest. He stores up fat in his big hump. He can live on this fat during long journeys. Another animal that helps to carry packages is the donkey. A male donkey is called a jack and female is called a jenny. The donkey is sure -footed and safe in rocky places, and he was lots of patience. He may be stubborn, but he is not stupid!
The hippopotamus enjoys spending his time in the river, rolling about on the river bed and getting covered with mud. This is the hippo's way of keeping cool in the hot sun. He is afraid of bathing so closes to the crocodile, for he knows that he is quite safe. The crocodile is afraid of being bitten by the hippo's strong teeth! The hippo is called 1the river horse'. But he is actually related to the pig, not the horse.
One of the animals that live in trees is the squirrel. He collects nuts put them in his secret hiding place. He sleeps throughout the winter, curled up in his drey.
