Remember the TV miniseries version of Stephen King's "It?" Even if you never saw it, chances are you couldn't escape the box art or production stills that featured Tim Curry as the evil clown Pennywise. Well, now the actor is voicing another white-faced ghoul that looks even more diabolical than Pennywise in the upcoming animated 3D horror comedy "Gingerclown."
Apparently filmmakers feel that movie audiences haven't been terrified by onscreen clowns enough. We've had "Killer Klowns from Outer Space," that clown from "Poltergeist," "Clownhouse," and "We All Scream for Ice Cream" from the "Masters of Horror" series. I guess there's always room for one more.
"Gingerclown" takes place in 1983. According to the movie's official synopsis, it revolves around "a group of high school students [who] are having a great time near Hollywood Hills [over] the weekend. They bump into the Loser from their school, Sam, who's just on his way home. Sam would do anything in order to get Jenny's attention, one of the prettiest girls in school. Unfortunately, she's also the girlfriend of the school's bully, Biff, the quarterback of the football team. Biff and his buddies are keen to take Sam to the old abandoned amusement park to make him prove his courage as part of their initiation ceremony. They involve Jenny in their cruel game as the grand prize of the competition. Sam accepts the challenge but the girl won't let him go in by himself. She follows him into the amusement park and a night they'll never forget. Because in the old park, hidden in the darkness are frightening and somewhat eccentric monsters, who love to torture innocent human beings while intensively annoying each other."
This sounds like it could provide an entertaining time for horror fans. Since "Gingerclown" is animated and in 3D, there is no limit to what they could have popping out of the screen at you. I'm not a big fan of 3D, but animated films can look good in the format if they're done right. They definitely look better than live-action films in 3D.
The cast for "Gingerclown" includes veteran actors like Tim Curry as the voice of Gingerclown, Sean Young ("Blade Runner") as Nelly the Spiderwoman, and Michael Winslow ("Police Academy") as Stomachcrumble. It also features horror genre favorites Brad Dourif ("Child's Play," "The Exorcist III") voicing Worm Creature and Lance Henriksen ("Aliens") as Braineater.
Balazs Hatvani is directing "Gingerclown" for Movierockets Entertainment. Hatvani has another film coming out soon titled "Thelomeris" that features Mark Hamill ("Star Wars"), Lance Henriksen, DJ Qualls ("Road Trip"), and James Purefoy ("Resident Evil," "Solomon Kane"). It is a sci-fi mystery that Hamill served as a creative script consultant for.
"Gingerclown" is Hungary's first 3D movie in English. Foreign horror films seem to be better than American ones. Hopefully this will continue that trend. The movie will be hitting theaters in fall of 2011.
