Anime Origins

Greg Huber
Anime was begun by Japanese animators who were experimenting with pioneering forms of cartooning in the early 20th century. Anime is a condensed form of the word animation. Around 1980, anime began to filter into the mainstream. After that, it poured in like a flood.

Anime covers the genres of action, horror, romance, comedy, science fiction, erotica, and many more. This wide range of genres and the compulsion to experiment within every one, even to combine them, is one of the reasons anime has gained its worldwide popularity.

To the casual observer, these cartoons may appear very simple, basic. Contrary to this inference, they usually can brag of complex character and story line development. These complexities are often depicted through numerous flashbacks. The flashbacks can portray these characteristics in an often-poignant fashion.

Juvenile humor is recurrent in anime, no matter the genre. Anime comedy may also lend itself to very dramatic and affecting flair. Again, this is part of the uniqueness of anime and the reason for its global embrace.

Most anime is not for children. Much anime is adult themed and driven by innuendo.

Voice dubbing has become a recent concern of anime producers. With the world now watching these exceptional animations, there has been a dispute over whether it is best to release anime features as voice-overs or to use subtitles instead. Fortunately, the CD market has solved the problem for anime collectors by releasing versions with subtitles and voice-overs on the same disc.

Anime is an outgrowth of the Japanese comic books called Manga. With the popularity and collection fever of anime, Manga have now caught on worldwide as well. There is a collection frenzy developing over the comic books in much the same way it began for the cartoons.

It would appear that the latest craze in animation is Anime. Even Disney has gotten into the act by becoming a distributor for some major anime full feature releases. But Japanese animation is more than just a craze. It is an artistic discipline that has paid its dues and deserves its coming of age. There are those who would say, at last!

The time has come for anime, and now anime has come to you. You can find anime titles in your neighborhood. You can rent anime from the local movie rental store and all major chains. Netflix has a continually developing library of anime available.

Of course you can buy anime online. Many people say that's where the craze for anime began. Who knows for sure? What we do know is that this brand of Japanese animation innovation is here to stay.
