Anime Review: To Love-Ru

Matt Remley
Spring is in the air, and now for us anime lovers, a series called To Love-Ru is now being aired in Japan. Before I get started with my first impression opinion of the first episode, I would like to mention that I try not to spoil the whole episode, but you should still proceed with caution.

To Love-Ru, is an anime of the action, science fiction, romance, and comedy genres. Currently To Love-Ru is only airing in Japan on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System), but I am actually watching a fan sub as I don't understand any Japanese.

At first, the way this anime started off made me think that maybe I wasn't even watching the right one. We're sort of thrown into a spaceship shoot out, three tiny one man ships following another one person spaceship, but this one has a female pilot. They manage to damage her ship quite a bit before the opening theme begins.

"Forever we can make it!" by Thyme, is the opening theme song for those of you wanting to know. It's J-rock, however I didn't particularly like it, but I did like the pictures of females they showed. All of them are in school outfits or bikini's and underwear, so you can just guess how much echii is in this anime.

After the opening is finished we find ourselves at school with the main male character, his name is Yuuki Rito. He is in the process of asking a girl he calls Haruna-chan, out on a date, but his friend Saruyama sneaks up behind him and scares him.

Overall, Rito seems like the average school kid with female troubles, as he sits in class he has several flashbacks of things that happened to him in the past just before asking out the girl of his dreams, Haruna. I feel sorry for the guy, he truly believes that he is in love, after school we see him attempting to ask her out yet again, and this time he is struck down by a spaceship flying down from the sky.

In the next scene we find him at home in the bathtub relaxing, something strange happens and suddenly he has a visitor in his bathtub, a female. For one thing, she's naked, at first Rito doesn't notice her, but he looks up and guess where his hands are? On her breasts.

Finally something happened that has me interested, before I was starting to get pretty bored of To Love-Ru. Furthermore, after Rito jumps out of the bathtub and tells his sister theres a naked girl in the tub, she checks and no-one is there. He calms down a bit and thinks that it was all just a daydream, but when he goes to his room and closes the door, there she is in his room, only wearing his towel.

I have to admit this girl is pretty cute, her name is Lala, and she explains that shes from another planet called Deviluke. Obviously he isn't willing to believe her at first because she can speak Japanese pretty well. However shes quick to shoot down that idea by turning around and bending over, showing off her tail (Yes a real tail and not her butt).

At one point while Rito and Lala are talking, a weird creature appears in the room and hugs Lala. She explains that it's just her "All-Purpose Costume Robot". The robot then transforms into very skin tight clothes for Lala. After that they are interrupted by two men in black, that jump in the room and wish to take Lala into custody.

Of course Rito fights with the two men, and the two manage to escape. They eventually get cornered, and a man beams down from a spaceship in front of them, he asks Lala to come home. Thus, we figure out that Lala is running away from home, and a set up marriage.

Clearly, she doesn't want to go back, so she pulls out some sort of machine and uses it. One man mention that it is one of her inventions, and they are all sucked into the machine, Rito also gets thrown around a bit before the machine explodes.

The next day we are following Rito to school, it seems as if Haruna was waiting to talk to him, but when Rito gets up the courage to ask her out, he looks up and Lala is standing there. Lala seems to think that he is talking to her, and starts throwing out words like marriage and such, a mans worst nightmare, correct?

That is the end for the first episode, take note that the closing theme is "Lucky Tune" by Santos Anna, it's actually better then the opening, only it has more sexy pictures of Lala instead of the other girls! So now that we have that out of the way, will I continue watching To Love-Ru?

Yes, I think I might just keep watching it after all. I was sort of bored in the beginning I have to admit, but after it picked up I was entertained enough to say that I may watch it to see what happens. It actually reminds me of Moon Crescent Love, only it has echii, so if you are a fan of romance, drama, and echii, this is probably the anime for you.

Two thumbs up!
