Ann Coulter Opens Mouth, Sticks Foot In, at CPAC

Says She is Unable to Talk About John Edwards Because Use of Word "faggot" Leads to Rehab

Ann Coulter caused quite a stir Friday night at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Coulter, who was asked to comment on former North Carolina Senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, responded: "It turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I'm kind of at an impasse -- I can't really talk about Edwards," she said.

The reference to going into rehab was possibly a reference to Isaiah Washington, who chose to enter rehab after referring to a "Grey's Anatomy" co-star as "faggot."

The response was swift from both sides of the aisle, including two prominent presidential candidates in attendance at the conservative conference.

A spokesman for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate and former governor of Massachusetts, said "It was an offensive remark. Governor Romney believes all people should be treated with dignity and respect."

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said, "The comments were completely inappropriate and there should be no place for such name-calling in political debate."

Edwards also was quick to respond. His campaign sent out an email which called the comment a "shameless display of bigotry," and asking supporters to help raise what it called "Coulter Cash."

Coulter told the New York Times the remark was meant as a joke. "I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards," she said. "That would be mean."

With this slip of the tongue, intentional or not, Coulter joins a growing number of politicians who can't seem to say what they mean or mean what they see.

Speaking in California last October, John Kerry said "Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

And recently, John McCain, on David Letterman's "Late Show," to pre-announce his candidacy, called the lives of those who died in Iraq as "wasted," a comment he now says was a poorly thought-out joke.

HAHAHA!I'm creating a list of liberal writers who don't want to give Coulter any press so as not to encourage her,and the list grows daily."We love it when Coulter makes these outrageous statements, she does for us what no liberal could do.We just wish she'd shut up!"HAHAHAHA

to say the F-word, home sexual, queer, fag, butt pirate is the same as saying, the n-word, african-american, black, n-word, slave.

Well said, Geary. Coulter thrives on publicity, and as long as people continue to talk (in public forums, at any rate) about her latest scandal, she will continue to be a thorn in a lot of people's sides. Ignore her, and she loses her power.

To whoever said something along the effect of "When liberals say something like this, it's ok, but when conservatives say it, it's not" - FALSE. FALSE. FALSE. I'm liberal and I guarantee you if a liberal said the same exact thing as Coulter, I would be equally as upset, if not more upset that someone of my political affiliation disgraced my party in such a way. Childish, sexually-discriminating comments like Coulter's are NOT the way to get a point across.

  • R. Geary 3/6/2007

Everything she does is calculated and for publicity sake. Let us never speak her name again and yes, maybe she will just disappear. I wish people would just ignore her for she gets off on the "liberal haters."
