Annie, the Dearest Cat I Have Ever Known

Part of Our Family

Janice Meyer
Annie is my cat, and I often call her Anniecat. She is the dearest and sweetest cat I have ever known or owned. She is most happy when she is near me, or sleeping with my hubby in his recliner. Annie sleeps on my bed every night. She is usually up near or on my pillow by morning.

This little cat seems small because our male cat, Pumpkin, is so much larger. She usually wants up on my lap when I am on the computer. Also, she gives me a kiss every morning right on my nose. All I have to say is, 'give mommy a kiss,' and make a kissing sound. Whenever we eat, she sits by her dish and meows, and looks at us with the expression that it is a matter of life or death.

I have often wondered why some pets are so endeared to their people. Lately, I have come to believe it is because of the love they are shown by those people. From the time Annie was a small kitten, I have always petted and/or stroked her as I walked by her lying on the floor or on a chair or bed.

Last evening (Christmas night), she jumped upon my lap while I was sitting on the couch. Since she is not allowed to sleep directly on the couch, she must have figured my lap would be okay. She immediately curled into a furry ball and planned to stay for a nap. Annie had not done this for quite some time, so it was a sweet surprise. She went to sleep there until someone walked into the room.

One thing Annie would love to eat, but is not allowed, is chocolate. It can be deadly for most pets, and we are cautioned to never feed them chocolate. I believe Annie can detect the scent of chocolate from quite a distance. I set a cup of hot chocolate on my desk in the office one day, and she was about to try and help herself to the delightful-smelling drink, when I saw her. I put my finger on top of her nose and said: "no, no, no." I have read that this is how mother cats discipline their kittens. It is difficult to discipline her, but when it is for her own good, I can manage.

This 'baby' does not like to be groomed, although she does not fight it outright. When I finish combing and using damp bath squares on her, she seems happy, especially when I tell her she is pretty. She also smells so fresh and clean, and her soft coat tends to feel more plush and smooth. Annie also likes the few treats I give her for being a good girl.

Yes, I believe love is the main thing that brings a pet closer to their people. It's not difficult; all you have to do is touch, pet and talk to them even when you are busy with your work. They seem to absorb the caring and love you offer.

Beautiful story and cat :) Makes me miss my cat all the more - she's among the living but resides at my ex-husbands presently (not allowed to have pets where I'm living)

Sometimes I read about cats after they died. I'm happy that you are talking about yours in the present tense. They make great pets..! Thanks, Janet.

I agree with Vincent, I'm also glad she's in the land of the living :-) We had a cat that died last year, but we had him for 23 years so it was to be expected. And, yes, 23 years!!!!

Sounds like your Annie is defintely part of the family. I loved this. We are cat people, so to speak. We have 8 altogether & I think your cat is smart, no couch but laps are okay. When our older cat died, we had a funeral service and burial service, gravestone and all, for my daughters sake. It was, seriously, like losing a family member. Ironically, I was finishing an article (on my Contributers Page here at AC) entitled "Do Pets Go To Heaven?". I'm not so sure that they do not. Hmmmm... Anyway, this helped my daugthers, my wife's and my (yes, me too, I cried like a baby) grieving process. Next to my "Do Babies Go To Heaven?" article (yes they do by the way), I have not had more webpage views on an article of my 70+! People love thier pets, I deduced! Thanks for sharing this. Loved it. : - )

I thought the same as Vincent so am so happy to read about your living cat! Anniecat sounds like a sweetie. I agree that the more love you give an animal the more love you'll receive from them!! :)

Well, that's a relief. I thought I was going to read your cat had died today! It's nice she's still in the land of the living...
