Annie Wang: Author Review

Chinese-American Author Whose Work Deals with Women Suffrage

Miko Amaranthine
Annie Wang, a Chinese author that has slipped under the radar in America homesteads has written two novels: "Lili: A Novel of Tiananmen" and "The People's Republic of Desire" both in the English language along with several books written exclusively in her native Chinese language. "Lili: A Novel of Tiananmen" is a wonderfully written historical, and lightly romantic novel written during the Tiananmen uprising in China of a ex-hooligan that illegally falls in love with an American man. "The People's Republic of Desire" is written about four modern women that work towards co-existence between modern China and their communistic upbringing. Although "Lili" is a more romantically inclined novel, "The People's Republic of Desire" is a satirically written novel that has been compared to "sex in the City". Beyond this modern women satire, issues of women suffrage and modern Chinese complications of social classes are brought up and discussed. Her realistic stories deal with common day issues that should be used as a guideline for asian studies.

Born in Beijing in 1972, Wang is most notably known as a journalist, public speaker, and cultural aware author who brings forth feminism in a not so culturally intact society. Having been brought up in a communist China and furthering her education at the University of California, Berkeley in 1996, she is familiar with the modern cosmopolitan American society along with her strict communistic homeland. Therefore, she is the perfect choice to interpret conflicting life situations between the two largest cultures in the world: Chinese and American lifestyles. Through her own personal life struggles, Wang has worked in many different high-tech companies in the Silicon Valley location, served in the Washington Post's Beijing bureau and then proceeded to interpret for the US State Department. After receiving success in foreign America, Wang decided to move back to her roots in 2004, to China to run a fashion magazine in Shanghai, China. Through all the venues that she has worked through, her success has been earned in all areas. She is a true inspiration to those working towards co-existing between two different cultures.

For now, Annie Wang continues to work on her culturally divided works through main-stream novels and posting as an affiliate for the Washington Post's Beijing bureau. Some of her most current works can been seen on http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/postglobal/annie_wang/ and www.anniewang.com/. After just releasing "The People's Republic of Desire", it should be a while before her next novel release however she should be placed on the Author watch list. Annie Wang is a true inspiration and as an Asian Studies major, I would suggest her articles posted in the Washington Post and novels to anyone looking for the true modern lifestyles of Asian citizens.
