Annoying Facebook Habits that May Lose You Friends
Sometimes it Would Be a Lot Better If You Weren't so Social
The problem with Facebook though is that some people just don't understand how to use it properly. I guess there truly isn't a correct or incorrect way to use the website as everyone does with it what they so choose, but my God there are just some out there that have got to change their ways. Chances are that I'm not the only one that feels this way either because I've had conversations with so many people who have vented their anger about others as well. With that, it is time to present you my views on the most annoying Facebook habits in the virtual world.
~ Forgetting Facebook Is A Public Forum: Ladies and gentlemen, you may have your profile available only to your friends and family but that would still make it in the public domain. If you have something particularly private that you need to discuss then do it by e-mail or messenger or better yet, pick up the phone. Chances are that your uncle or cousin or long time friend really don't want to get on your page and read up about your most recent sexual escapade or bout with a "bad stomach bug."
~ Poking: What's the point? I really don't know why this is even a feature on Facebook because it's useless. I'm sick of signing on and seeing a small list off to the right side that tells me to "poke back" or "remove." Chances are it's going to be removed and if you send another one then expect the same to happen. You wouldn't walk up to someone on the street and jab them with your finger would you? If you do then I'm glad I don't know you.
~ Farmville: Really? I've never played it before but have paid attention as others have and I don't see the point. You can tell me all you want that it is a good time waster and is "just for fun," but it's hard to locate the fun in it. Please stop sending me request after request to plow your crops or water your fields or send you a bale of hay. Also, do me another favor and don't post your accomplishments to your page. Who cares if you found a pink sad cow or a lost blue dog wandering around? Oh what I wouldn't give for there to be an application to poison your fields or murder your farm animals.
This also holds true for Mafia Wars. I will not help you in your mission or bank robbery or contract killing so stop asking.
~ Fifty Status Updates A Day: Letting us all know what you're doing for the day is not a problem whatsoever. So you landed in a really weird situation or have an odd task to do...great, update your status. Telling us what you're doing every five or ten minutes is just without a doubt completely ignorant. My status is updated probably once every two to three days, if even that much. I don't even have a problem with those that update theirs every day because there is bound to be something new to tell. But to those that find it necessary to let us know they're "going to the store," or "sitting on the sofa," or "picking up a piece of paper from off the floor?" Do yourself a favor and get off the computer or put the Blackberry down because you're a tad obsessed. My dream is to log onto Facebook in the evening and not see your last ten status updates because they all happened within the past hour.
~ Tagging Me In Pictures I'm Not In: So you took this really great shot of a cityscape that reminded you of me and you want me to see it. Fantastic. Shoot me a note that the picture is on your page or something like that, but don't tag me in it. Don't tag me as a building or as a street or as a cloud because I am none of those things. Do you see these blue eyes and my brown hair in your picture? You sure don't so that means tagging me is an unnecessary evil. If you tag me then that means people I know will look through the "Pictures of Me" and see a cityscape that my person is nowhere near. That will then lead to fifty or a hundred e-mails or comments asking me when my trip there was or why I'm tagged as a stoplight. Those are small annoyances I can do without.
~ Friending Those They Don't Know: Isn't it fun getting requests from people you haven't seen in forever or those you can't quite recall? Ok, so it kind of is because some of those people you probably haven't spoken to in years for a reason. My issue comes from those that send me a friend request and then have the nerve to ask me who I am. Seriously? If you sent the request then you should know who the hell you're sending it too. That's like calling someone and asking "who is this?" Oh no, you don't call my house and then ask who you're speaking to because that means you never should have picked up the phone in the first place.
Another side note to this is when people I know start friending other people I know but they don't know. For example: My sisters and I are all friends with a Person #1. We are also all friends with Person #2. Person #2 has now taken it upon themselves to send a friend request to Person #1 even though my sisters and I all know they have no idea who Person #1 is. You can't be friends by Facebook association people.
~ Grammatical and Spelling Errors: Just about every internet browser has a spell check function on it so I beg of you all to use it. It will let you know your mistakes and allow you to correct them before posting your thoughts and making you look like a drooling moron. A typo here and there is understood, but not in every other word. Sadly there aren't really any grammar checkers so just give your status updates or comments a good once over after you're done typing and read it out loud. If it doesn't sound right to you then figure out what's wrong with it and make a change or two. I'm letting you know that if I have trouble getting through the first couple words then I'm not going to finish reading it probably.
Oh, and learn the difference between they're, there, and their as well as you're and your. Please. I beg of you.
~ Status Complaints: I'll be the first to say that my status updates used to be guilty of this but things have changed in my life, and I see how annoying it was now. Don't update your status just to let us know about the bad things in your life because there's no need to bring everyone else down. If you're having hard times then contact a friend personally and have a talk with them so they can help you out. Don't go fishing for a "pity party" by laying out all your transgressions and horrible life moments in your status update constantly because the only goal you'll accomplish is alienating yourself.
~ Posting Pictures of Me Without Permission: To post pictures of me from an event or gathering we were at together that I know pictures were taken at is alright. Don't randomly go find old photos of me from goodness knows when and putting them up for the world to see. I don't know about all of you but my looks have changed considerably from high school and even a lot since college. I wasn't the cutest looking kid in the bunch and it's sort of a relief to no longer look the way I did so it would be appreciated if you kept those pictures in your shoebox. Thanks.
~ Screaming: For the love of all that is holy, take caps lock off please. It is totally unnecessary for you to "scream" in internet terms and it is actually quite annoying. People may have an interest in what you have to say, but they don't wish to try and read through a three-line status update or comment that is completely capitalized. It makes your words very difficult to read and it will cause people to resent you so do yourself a favor and take caps lock off. If you actually hold the "shift" button down the whole time then that is even sadder.

Post a CommentThis is hilarious but true. I deleted my Facebook account months ago. I was fed up with the crap. Very entertaining and informative article!
haha good article. I wrote a similar one. :)
Fun read you summed it up well!
Thanks yall! :)
I swear to you that all of these things make me want to steer clear of Facebook so badly at times, but it is good for some things. I just don't understand how people can honestly do even one or two of the habits I mentioned and think it's ok. Yet I know a few people guilty of almost all of them.
Great column from your point of view too Justin.
Nice rant, Danny. I find it particularly funny because i posted a more general version of your article. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2621247/facebooks_biggest_problem_is_the_people.html?cat=9
