Yellow Cockscomb. These annuals have lovely, feathery yellow flowers that will look wonderful in your Houston, Texas mixed border. This flower is practically maintenance free once you have established it in your garden, and also makes a very nice dried flower in arrangements. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in your Houston, Texas mixed border; it also makes a lovely accent flower, and does well in containers. These annuals grow to be about a foot high, sometimes higher.
Angel Face Angelonia. This very, very beautiful flower will give your mixed border a touch of elegance. The white bloom resembles an orchid, and will grace your Houston, Texas garden from spring through late fall. Plant these annuals in full sun in your mixed border, and allow its soil to dry between watering. This flower also makes a great accent plant, and does well in Houston, Texas container gardens.
Blue Lace Flower. Another elegant flower for your Houston, Texas mixed border, these annuals have very delicate blooms of white and blue. Plant them in full sun and protect them from frost. They will bloom in March, April and May in your Houston, Texas garden, and will do best when planted in the fall. Water them lightly, and mix a little sand in their soil. These annuals do well in containers.
Wax Begonia. These annuals have lovely pink and white flowers that will bloom from April through November in your Houston, Texas garden. A great plant for mixed borders, they do best when planted in partial to filtered sun, and prefer moist soil. These annuals also need to be protected from frost. Expect heights of up to two feet.
Calendula. For color you can't beat these daisy-like blooms in a mixed border. These annuals will bloom in orange, cream, yellow and apricot from November all the way through May in your Houston, Texas garden. Plant them in full sun and they will grow in almost any soil. You can also eat the plants and leaves (if you are so inclined.) These are great annuals for a container garden, and will grow to be between one and two feet tall.
Wild Lime Coleus. These are very pretty annuals that change color depending on the amount of light they receive in your Houston, Texas garden. Planted in partial shade, the leaves are more lime colored, while in full sun the leaves will be more yellow than green. With purple flowers, too, these annuals are perfect for your Houston, Texas mixed border. They are cold hard to freezing temperatures, disease resistant, and are also great in shade gardens, as groundcovers, and in containers.
Early Cosmos. If you like big, showy flowers, plant these annuals in your mixed border. They will bloom from April through July with pink and white flowers, and do best in full sun. These annuals will reach heights of up to four feet in your garden.
