Anonymous Takes Wall Street & Destroys Facebook All by Thanksgiving

Jesse Schmitt

So there are likely many of you who have heard of the group called Anonymous. They are a group who has taken on the Bay Area Regional Transit (BART) system in San Francisco for some time now. According to two newish videos on YouTube, Anonymous will be taking on Wall Street and Facebook; all before Thanksgiving.

On September 17 they plan on setting up shop in Lower Manhattan in a peaceful protest. The following is the copy from their YouTube video:

"Hello citizens of the Internet. We are Anonymous. On September 17 Anonymous will flood into Lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices. "We want freedom." This is a non-violent protest, we do not encourage violent in any way. The abuse and corruption of corporations, banks and governments ends here! Join us! We are anonymous. We are a legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Wall Street expect us."

Anonymous are going to be pretty busy because concurrent with their fall camping trip to Lower Manhattan, they also plan on taking out Facebook.

"Attention citizens of the world we are Anonymous. We wish to get your attention, hoping you will heed the warnings as follows. Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing activist or guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy. Facebook has been selling your information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so called 'white hot' info tech firms are working for...governments such as Egypt and Syria. Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your privacy settings. And deleting your account is impossible. Even if you delete your account all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more private is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. You cannot hide from the reality in which you the people of the internet live in Facebook is the opposite of the...cause. You're not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realize that what we have done here is right. Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011. We are Anonymous. We are a legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."

Listening to the computer generated voices from these videos takes me back to "OK Computer" from Radiohead ("Fitter, healthier and more productive; a pig, in a cage, on antibiotics"). Of course Radiohead have better production values. But what does everyone think about this assault on Lower Manhattan and a social media platform which is basking in the limelight; even if its utility may be a little bit played (do we really need to know where our kindergarten friends we haven't seen in 40 years who live on the other side of the country are going grocery shopping?).

I don't know what kind of security Zuckerberg's got in place in Palo Alto, but I've got a pretty good idea what NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly will think about a bunch of barricades, tents and kitchens being set up in Lower Manhattan. A few months? Try a long, uncomfortable morning.
