Anonymous on Wall Street and Fascist Horror

Jesse Schmitt
I am a little bored with some of what's going on in New York City. This group "Anonymous " said they would be occupying Wall Street in a peaceful protest for several months beginning September 17. Some of my more zealous friends have begun speaking out in support of this group on Facebook.

Anonymous are trying to disrupt Wall Street, kill the world economy and bring attention to their agenda. What many supporters of this movement don't appreciate is that it took the world economy a long time to come into being; there is no way that by setting up shop downtown and having some backers call in and send you pizzas (that's been the tool to keep these folks alive) that you are going to be able to do much of anything positive. Sorry, but that's just not the way it works.

So I have not spoken out about this, like much of the broader media (imagine that? if the media all over the world zoomed in on every protest anywhere?). I was doing some social media earlier tonight and I made an anecdotal comment about something completely unrelated when one of my Facebook friends, Jen, told me how she was "offended that the press is totally ignoring a pretty historic movement in NYC that's been taking place since 9/17."

No. I haven't been ignoring it. I mean, I wrote about their freaky YouTube page in July. I knew of their plans. But if they're going to be here for "several months" -- I've got time. (I wonder what they do on the weekends? I mean Wall Street really vacates on Friday afternoons and businesses close up shop.)

Anyway I sent her a link I'd seen on NBC News 4 that very evening about these protesters. I even think I marginalized the Anonymous working ethos when I lumped in "protester" to the socio-economic model. Which, if you think about it, it is! What ever would protesters do if capitalism were replaced by anarchy? They'd have to complain that they had no one organized to attack.

I won't even get into our exchange where my good friend with the cute puppy dogs and her own business of hand craftsmanship and silver soldering said how we have been replaced by fascisim. Just for all my emboldened readers who side with that viewpoint; I've included the common definition of fascism below:

"A political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition."

The mere fact that these Anonymous are even able to protest completely invalidates anyone's argument of fascism. So no, we're not ignoring anything historic; we're just not swayed by ridiculous arguments from crazy homeless who are taking pizza from strangers.

...Bite my lip and watch my tongue. Fiddle dee-dee.

Well, the demo has started, and the big themes are to reduce corruption, have the government help the regular non-powerful people, and get money out of politics.

Those are not radical demands. They're pretty moderate.

Maybe it's all a ruse to get free pizza.

I don't know what to say, so I shall "Bite my lip and watch my tongue." cheers
