Another Birthday

Rachel Rosenthal
Her birthday looms on the horizon ~

Another October approaches

The skies turn gray.

It's been over twelve years since I

Held her.

My daughter will be thirteen.

I rock my baby to sleep,

Smelling the shampoo in his hair,

Triggering deep, buried memories ~

Another baby, a cold hospital room

Stolen moments when she was simply mine.

My daughter will be thirteen.

My oldest son jumps on his bed,

Throws stuffed animals with abandon,

Collapses in a fit of giggles.

'For my birthday, I want a scooter!'

he declares, as I tuck him in.

My daughter will be thirteen.

In the back of the closet

In a small gray box sits a

Pair of diamond earrings that I received

When I turned thirteen.

I take them out, softly sing

Happy birthday and

Begin to cry.

My daughter is thirteen.
