Another Craft Show Based Career

The demands of bringing up a family together with career pressures could leave very little time to indulge in your creativity during your middle age. As more people of this generation complete their careers and approach retirement, they have more than sufficient creativity and energy remaining to express themselves through a fresh passion as they were not able to, in their youth.

A reason for the recent increase in craft fairs all over the country is that the baby boomers are now expressing their creative urges and latent talents through arts and handcraft. The plus factor about participating in these shows is that you can get going right from whatever level of creative activity you are at, and acquire skills each year as you go on.

For a start your new hobby and enterprise should be approached with the same vigour you took to your former workplace. Baby boomers have so much to contribute to by way of energy and talent to society that it would be a waste not to do so. Therefore it is an ideal circumstance that they have the time in their retirement years to pursue this.

Three levels of preparation are necessary to make ready for the first craft fair you want to enter. You should contact the organizers to book a booth. An easy method of doing this is to attend the latest fair to be held in your area which is usually in association with a seasonal celebration like music or food festival or even the Oktoberfest. Attending these other fairs will accomplish much and amply prepare you for your own first participation.

You could observe a variety of vendor booths and acquire a better idea of how to dress your own.

Vendors at the booths will be able to give you information about how to get yourself on the programme so you participate not only in this fair but in any other forthcoming events of this nature. You need not fear that these vendors will see you as a future threat to their position, since amongst these folk there exists a camaraderie which is another enjoyable aspect of socializing with other artistic people.

You can also make contact with organizers of the event and get an idea of whether their programme is suitable for you.

Another part of your preparation is to build your booth. Gathering the finances and skills to do this may take awhile and it is always a good idea to start early. You should be able to dismantle and store your booth between shows and your association with old hands at these fairs will be useful to get some tips on how to build your booth.

Last but most important is the preparation of the actual craft items you are going to display at your booth. Items that seem popular at fairs you visit could be purchased as templates upon which you can build your own innovations and creative ideas to finally turn out products unique to your personality for the fair.

You will also have to pay attention to custom building your booth to make it special and different. As you were visiting other craft fairs you may have noted that some booth seem to draw more crowds than others. You too should make the effort to present your booth in an attractive manner.

A host of possibilities present themselves to attract attention to your booth. People use strategies such as live music or performances, videos, contests and candles to draw the crowds. You could experiment with what seems to suit you best. While there is a special thrill in making sales each day, the bigger excitement is about being finally able to express yourself in the creativity that did not have the opportunity to blossom until this stage of your life. This is an unparalleled benefit of learning how to sell your own craft at the craft fairs.
