Royal Caribbean is but one of a list of cruise ships that has experienced peril in the open seas, leading to injury and sometimes death of passengers. In the most recent episode at sea, 12 Royal Caribbean passengers on the Independence of the Seas ship were injured when an explosion erupted, according to Cruise Critic Dan Askin.
Royal Caribbean was docked at the port of Gibraltar today when an explosion occurred due to a fuel tank at the port location. Injuries incurred by the cruise ship's passengers were said to be minor, according the cruise line's official spokesperson Cynthia Martinez, with a dislocated finger being the main injury, followed by minor abrasions and burns.
All injured passengers were able to be treated onboard, reducing the need to seek treatment at the locale, and the cruise line immediately attempted to distance the ship from the port upon the first realization the fuel tank had exploded.
This isn't the first time Royal Caribbean's passengers have been at risk. Back in June of last year, it was reported that an employee of the cruise line was responsible for many thefts that occurred of passengers homes while they were on the high seas cocooned in their Royal Caribbean rooms or walking about the ship.
Bethsaida Sandova, the Royal Caribbean employee and travel planner, along with her husband John Lopez helped themselves to property at the homes of several Royal Caribbean vacationers during their first night out to sea. You can read all about that at "Royal Caribbean cruise line robber caught."
In addition to the Royal Caribbean passenger injuries, the Gibraltar Chronicle reported onshore injuries, with one listed as serious. Passengers on the cruise line were whisked back out to sea, as the ship reportedly sustained no damage due to the explosion. Independence of the Seas is now expected to make the scheduled stop in Cannes, France on Thursday, barring any further incidents, of course.
