I Love You Man is about Peter(Paul Rudd), a Beverly Hills real estate agent who is getting married soon but does not have a close enough friend to serve as his best man. There is good sense of humour, loveable characters and great music from Rush in this movie. One leaves the movie feeling happy for a guy who finally has a best man but one also leaves the movies with a feeling of deja vu.
Why are the new Hollywood comedies so similar? The first step is to choose one or a few of comedies new legends as Vanity Fair names them; Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel or Seth Rogen. The second step is to form main characters that male audience will love and the female audience will not be angry at. These characters are boyish men with cool interests and they all have similar sense of humor. On the other hand their love interests are sensitive, hot females with somehow very white teeth but definitely not so funny. The third step is to set a world with no real problems, a world of rich people and the locations need to compliment this rich bubble such as Hawaii or Beverly Hills. The families are generally quirky but loving and love talking sex during dinner. They tend to be politically correct, although the main characters and the best friends are white, they make sure there are African Americans or Asians in the picture. Obviously the screenplay writers try hard not to offend women and minorities but are not at all interested in developing the female or minority characters at all.
Many might think it is pointless to take these movies seriously as they don't advertise themselves to be socially conscious. On the other hand if you add their box office revenues and the endless product replacement income, they are the new kings of Hollywood with great power.
