Another Oil Rig Explodes in the Gulf

A well connected to an oil and gas production platform exploded on Thursday, engulfing the vessel in flames about 100 miles off the coat of Mississippi forcing 13 people overboard.

According to Petty Officer Bill Colclough of the U.S. Coast Guard all 13 people have been accounted for. The oil platform is reported to still be on fire as officials try to determine if an oil leak is occurring.

Although Mariner Energy confirms that the fire started aboard the platform and that there has been no leak, Mississippi Gov. Bobby Jindal said that there were reports of "sheen" in the water. The Coast Guard confirmed around 2:30 pm that there was a mile long oil sheen in the water.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that the federal government has assets ready in case of any environmental problems.

Mariner Energy describes itself as one of the leading oil and energy production companies in the Gulf of Mexico. The company said it had interests in about 350 federal offshore leases last year, with more than 110 of those in development. The company also has about 300 employees and a yearly income of about $1.7 million. Mariner Energy is also in the middle of finalizing a merger with a larger company, Apache Corporation.

The explosion comes just five months after a devastating explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 20. The Deepwater Horizon explosion killed 11 people and caused oil to gush into the Gulf of Mexico leading to one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.
