Another Reason to Love Soccer - Glenn Beck Hates It!

It's World Cup time again, and although all sorts of people like the sport and millions of Americans will view some games, there are those who can't help but attack it as somehow foreign and below Americans.

Of course, when some tea-soaked idiocy needs a spokesperson, one can look to Glenn Beck to step on up.

""I don't get the baseball thing, but the soccer thing, I hate it so much - probably because the rest of the world likes it so much, and they riot over it, and they continually try to jam it down our throat... It doesn't matter how you sell it to us. It doesn't matter how many celebrities you get. It doesn't matter how many bars open early. It doesn't matter how many beer commercials they run. We don't want the World Cup. We don't like the World Cup. We don't like soccer. We want nothing to do with it. You can package it any way - you can spend all kinds of money. You can force it on our television sets. We will not enjoy the World Cup."

Well, Mr. Beck, there are millions of Americans who love the game. Here in Portland, Oregon, we are excited that we will have an expansion MLS team, as the Portland Timbers make the transition to the big leagues.

It's a move that actually seems late in coming, as Portland holds the moniker Soccer City USA and is home to one of the nation's premier collegiate soccer programs - the University of Portland Pilots.

But back to Glenn Beck - to many of us, it's a badge of honor to be markedly different from Glenn Beck., He sees threats from soccer, but what is more foreign to a sane mind, a wonderful game, or Beck's rantings.

The oddities worthy of derision are all Beck's - his goofy religion with it's magic underwear, his God complex and delusional self-imaginations, his incredible twisting turns he takes with history, his dry-drunk persona. Beck and his mindless minions are far less appealing than soccer.

And of course it's just not Beck. And it's just not soccer. I won't even go into how empty of virtue as sport NASCAR seems to be.

What Beck does help us do is to expose more Americans to just what the far right is thinking, and how much they need to be stopped.
