Beginning at 7 p.m. last night, central Indiana was under a winter storm warning with news weathermen calling for 4-7 inches of snow overnight and during the day today. With at least 3 inches on the ground from the last couple of storms, could the road crews handle another storm? It seemed that the worst of the storm would hit below I-70 in the southern half of Indiana. This is the same area that has been getting hit extremely hard with most of the snows that have arrived this winter. Newscasters are predicting that this snow will end early on Tuesday and that there is more snow to come on Saturday although, no amounts for that snow have been given.
This storm will hit the northeast where they certainly do not need more snow. Snows that have caused the federal government to be shut down seem to be occurring more and more frequently. This current storm is expected to bring 7-10 inches of snow to the Boston area over the next 24-48 hours. With the dangers that come along with this type of snow, it makes a person want to feel that they are more than just stocked up on food. These are the kinds of snow amounts that cause power outages and roof collapses.
Central Indiana road crews are fighting today to keep up with the snow. With many areas getting up to one inch per hour, it is nearly impossible for them to keep the roads clear. Wind gusts can only make these matters worse and could lead to impassable roads. Brown County has just advised all county personnel that the county is under a level 1 travel advisory and I am sure that many other central Indiana counties will do the same over the next few hours.
Schools are concerned about the amount of time that children are missing class too. February 15th is normally a day off for the schools as it is the day we celebrate President's Day, but for the majority of schools in central Indiana use this day as a snow makeup day, but once again Mother Nature has not allowed the schools to be open to make up that day. As a result of the weather this winter, central Indiana students may be in school up through the first part of June.
With Indiana having below normal temperatures this past summer and above normal precipitation, one can only hope that with the amount of precipitation that we have experienced all winter, will lead to a warmer and dryer summer this year.
