Another Stonehenge?

Greg Seltz
Using state of the arc geophysical imaging technology, archaeologists have discovered another Stonehenge within throwing distance of original, prehistoric monument. Magnetometry readings of the discovery estimate it to measure 82 feet wide, and features 20+ holes that are most likely postholes for large stones, or in this particular case, possibly wooden timbers. For those of you unfamiliar with aforementioned jargon, it appears that a neighboring, wooden-twin of Stonehenge is buried beneath the surface. Until the team begins digging, however, details remain uncertain. The circle's date is estimated to have existed 2,500 to 2,200 BC; which suggests that this location was created whilst Stonehenge was still in its most dramatic form.

Other "Stonehenges" have been discovered in the vicinity as well. In 1925, Woodhenge was discovered only 2 miles away from Stonehenge. And only last year, in 2009, archaeologists founded Bluestonehenge, named after the fragments of bluestone occuping the area.

Ancient Stonehenge was a sacred, off-limits monument that only high priests or nobility were allowed to access. Even today, researchers try to determine exactly how these gigantic stones were placed without the equipment our modern society operates. And now it appears that many others were constructed in addition.

This discovery reminds me of the Old Testament when the Chosen People set out to erect multiple worshipping grounds. Because they were not allowed, or near enough, to worship at the original location, others were constructed. At first, God was furious, but eventually realized that they simply yearned to worship him and were not creating fals idols, etc. Here, it appears that mulitple Stonehenge's were designed, some of higher quality, whilst the poor were forced to worship in those built of timber. Just a theory though.....

Really interesting. When I go back to England every year, I don't get to travel much, just visiting family.
