Another World Series Drought Ends

The debate has officially begun now as far as who is going to be the next team to end a drought on winning a World Series. The San Francisco Giants had ended it in the 2010 World Series in five games over the Texas Rangers. For the Giants, it was their first championship in the Bay Area as the last one was in 1954 against the Cleveland Indians when they were known as the New York Giants, not to be confused with the NFL team of the same name.

The two teams left would be the Cleveland Indians the Chicago Cubs. Both franchises have not been successful in the World Series as of late. In fact, the Cubs haven't been to one since 1945. The Indians, however, have not won it all since 1948 and since that time has been either a terrible team or a team that is good but not good enough to win it all. Then again, Cleveland hasn't been successful in winning major championships since 1964 but that's another story.

The Cleveland Indians have been a franchise that has taken a turn for the worst so to speak. In the 2000s, it can be best described as a decade of mediocrity with only two playoff spots. There were four winning seasons during that time but only two times did they make the playoffs only to fall flat on their face. Could the Indians contend within the next couple seasons? It is possible that they could contend but would it be a safe bet? Probably not considering what has happened since the end of the 2007 season. It would be a long shot to pick them to win it all because it seems that they can get good but never good enough to win it all no matter what. Think about this one, this team basically develops talent for other teams and appears to be more like a Major League farm team.

The Chicago Cubs, however, have had plenty of bad luck. Since the 2003 season, the Cubs have not gone back to the NLCS and not since 1945 have they been to a World Series. What else is there to say other than that? The franchise has had its fair share of bad moments. The most recent, in regards to a collapse, would be The Bartman incident. For those not aware, Steve Bartman, a Chicago Cubs fan, interfered with what could have been a catch potentially stopping the Marlins from making it to the World Series.

The crazy thought would be that perhaps maybe the only chance of really finding out who ends the drought could be if somehow both teams got to the World Series. It isn't likely as one of them could potentially break their own streak against another team but this could be the one series that could have plenty of intrigue. It may never happen and maybe neither wins anytime soon but only time will tell.
