Another Year in Memory

Melissa R. Mendelson
I remember 9/11.

I remember CNN breaking news.

Was this some kind of joke?

Was this real?

How could this be real?

Black smoke choked the sky,

and chaos tore through the office.

But I was standing still.

How could this be real?

My world was burning to the ground,

and all those lives were gone

in a blink of an eye.

Why?

The horror of this day

was painted across

the television set,

and my mind retreated

to the dark corners

far away from reality.

But there was no escape.

There was no changing the channel.

This was real.

They were gone.

How do I live past this day?

How do loved ones continue on

after such tragedy?

Why?

My world was breaking apart,

begging for justice,

but would justice be served?

I remember 9/11.

Nobody could forget

such a horrific event,

but we moved forward,

struggling to rebuild.

But would we ever recover?

Would our world

ever be the same?
