Common Questions Answered Concerning Chiropractic Medicine

As with any type of medical treatment which has not always been in the mainstream core of medical practice, chiropractic care is often misunderstood or not understood comprehensively. If you are considering chiropractic care you may have questions which need answers. Here are some answers to the most common questions about chiropractic medicine.

What is chiropractic care? chiropractic care is a health care method based on the body's natural healing ability. Chiropractic medicine is the largest drug-free, non-surgical profession in the U.S. Chiropractic care is mainly concerned with the spine and the natural method of restoring the balance of the body.

So how does chiropractic care work? This type of care is one way to correct distortions in the structure of the body. The distortions are called "subluxations". Subluxations which are localized are mainly found around the joints in the neck, back and spine. Problems with subluxations can include any, or a combination, of complaints such as: pain, tenderness, swelling, numbness, spasms and tingling. Chiropractic care is used to realign or readjust the joints to place the body and nervous system in correct alignment and working order.

But is chiropractic care safe? The main approach to health care used by Chiropractic medicine is that there is nothing taken out, or put into, the body for it to work. This gives chiropractic care one of the lowest malpractice rates in all of the health care field.

If you have decided to try chiropractic care, what should you expect when you go to your first appointment? As with other medical examinations, the first visit to a chiropractor will involve an initial consultation. This includes a case history and a discussion about your present condition and needs. The chiropractor will do an examination and evaluation to find the cause of the problem which will include physical tests and evaluations of spinal movement and posture. For serious cases, x-rays may be ordered for further study. After the analysis is complete, the doctor should be able to explain what the problem is and provide you with an appropriate course of action. You may be referred to another doctor for more tests if needed. This is normal as chiropractic care works along with other medical treatments as needed.

What happens if you need continued treatment? Chiropractic care is like any other type of ongoing medical care. Your doctor will discuss with you the plan for continuous care, including the factors that come with it. These factors can include stress and activity levels, habits, lifestyle, your work environment, your diet and your exercise regimen. A care program will be created between you and your chiropractor to suit your individual needs. The program will focus on chiropractic care and how it can be used to relief pressure and pain associated with nerve irritation from misaligned joints or bones.

What should you expect from chiropractic care while you are under treatment? To say that you will heal at a specific pace or time would be fabrication. With any type of medical treatment, people respond differently with different results. While this is true, there are some general considerations which hold true for chiropractic care. Children respond quicker to care than adults. Most people who use chiropractic care do so as a preventative measure. The more serious the alignment issue, the longer it will take to treat or heal. Reported results show that most people have a gradual, progressive relief of their symptoms. As a general rule, and as with any medical condition, the longer your spine or joint has been out of alignment the longer and more aggressive the treatments will be.

What about payment? Is there going to be a problem with the insurance provider? Reports have stated that chiropractic care is one of the most effective types of care in regards to cost. Because of this, health care plans and insurance provide coverage for chiropractic care today. To find out if you are covered, check with the policy or your benefit manager.
