Antelope Valley's Top Independent Coffee Shops

Eric Martin
The Antelope Valley boasts several independent coffee houses spread across the valley floor. Each café is unique. Each offers a different take on what it means to be an independent coffee house. Varying styles of seating and atmosphere characterize each coffee shop and really put the "independent" at the center of the cafe concept.

Sagebrush Café, Perk Place, and Butler's Coffee each cover the basic coffee menu and go beyond it, all offering hot and iced espresso drinks, tea, and specialities.

Local coffee houses are often great places to find the life of a community through art, music, and poetry. These three indpendent coffee shops are no exception. Live music is offered at all three establishments. One of the cafes is also a fledgling art gallery with rotating shows of local and non-local painters, photographers and illustrators.

Sagebrush Café - (Quartz Hill)

Sagebrush Café is the newest of the Antelope Valley's independent coffee houses.

Keeping things simple but elegant, Sagebrush Café is a place full of color and light with big windows and patio seating. Ceramic mugs are offered for those staying to sit for a while, which is part of their dual effort to be eco-conscious and classy.

The coffee house's coffee gets rave reviews for its mellow, rich flavor (without the bitterness of some other coffee shops). Beyond the hot and iced coffee and espresso drinks, Sagebrush Café offers Italian Sodas, fresh flavored iced teas, and a selection of tasty pastries.

The café is an art gallery too. Sagebrush Café's dedication to art and culture makes it a great place to see photography, paintings, and other forms of fine art as well being a good place to meet artists. Every three months a new gallery show goes up, keeping the work fresh and ensuring a dynamic atmosphere.

A few more offerings at Sagebrush Cafe: free wireless internet, live music, gallery opening receptions, random holiday celebrations (Ground Hog Day party!), unique stationary and other gifts.

Perk Place - (Lancaster)

Located in downtown Lancaster, Perk Place is a relaxed space serving up high quality coffee. Like the other coffee houses on this list, the café owner is often on hand at Perk Place. There is something nice about seeing the person in charge. It's reassuring somehow.

In a cozy space, Perk Place offers a wide variety of seating from comfortable couches to bistro tables and high stools. It all fits together nicely and you can enjoy your latte in the manner that best suits you.

Perk Place offers wireless internet to its patrons and boasts a large menu with lunch and dessert taking prominent places.

Butler's Coffee - (Palmdale)

Of the three independent coffee houses on this list, Butler's Coffee is the only one that roasts its own coffee. With an eclectic menu that includes ice cream and sandwiches, Butler's presents a comprehensive take on the coffee shop genre. Smoothies are also on the menu.

Every Friday evening, Butler's Coffee hosts a live music night with local performers getting up to show their stuff.

The Palmdale coffee house is located near the Antelope Valley Mall in the commercial center that also houses Buffalo Wild Wings. Padded chairs and low coffee tables outfit the homey atmosphere of Butler's Coffee, where you can also take advantage of their wireless internet.
