Anthony David: India.Arie Goes Indie with SoulBird Music
Free Your "Taxed Out " Mind with the Soulful Sounds of Anthony David
So, a few days ago, I had the chance to speak with Anthony about his musical journey and his new venture with SoulBird Music.
Saba, Ink: Tell me about your relationship (with India) and the evolution of SoulBird Music?
Anthony: Well, I met her when I first moved to Atlanta about 10 years ago. We liked the same kind of music, like Donnie Hathaway and the singer songwriter types. We worked with each other locally, she would support me by flying me and I'd tour with her and when the opportunity came for her label she thought I'd be a good to represent it. We get to represent together with our first collaboration, the song "Word."
Saba, Ink: What is it like to believe in somebody so much that you spend your rent money on them?
Anthony: When you're a creative type, I guess you you're not smart enough not to (laughing). You just don't think about it and just do it. It is just sort of a natural thing and not really an economic decision. From the first time I heard her and we started working together I liked what she was about. From seeing her was I wrong?
Saba, Ink: You sure weren't, and I've got the concert tickets to prove it (laughing). So, as a Man and a Black Man specifically who comes out of the Hip/Hop Generation and says that you are making songs from an emotional perspective in relationships, how hard of a sell will that be for you?
Anthony: Well the challenge is to show that emotion and not necessarily be trippin' on it. You can still retain what is considered "hard" and express yourself. I don't think you have to be weepy to convey your emotions. It is true that it is difficult for us (Men) to convey our emotions so whatever gift I have received makes it easier for me to express those feelings. Women like it and Men appreciate my ability to put it into words.
Saba, Ink: So, what's your 30 second elevator pitch?
Anthony: I think of myself like a Bill Withers. I am a storyteller that gives you good melodies and lyrics that you can relate to. Now we've got the whole rest of elevator ride....(laughing)
Saba, Ink: Cool, I'm done....I'm sold (laughing)...Okay so, a lot of independent artists talk about being boxed in by the industry. What are your thoughts on that and how, or do you want to change that.
Anthony: I don't mind boxes, It is an introduction to things. The idea of a genre is fine with me , It is simply about making the boxes bigger. If you see my music as neo-soul, then jump in the box with me.
Saba, Ink: I understand the "SoulBird" comes from the idea of a butterfly. Generally we associate butterflies with a kind of change or metamorphosis. What's been your metamorphosis?
Anthony: Well it began with my introduction to Atlanta, meeting India and back then, I was more so pushing her and focusing on being a songwriter. When I joined the band it was about taking on responsibility and growing up as a Man.
Saba, Ink: What does the album title "Acey Deucy" mean?
Anthony: It is a compilation of previous independent records. It is really about two sides of me as an artist.
Saba, Ink: What has influenced your style of music?
Anthony: I am originally from Savannah, Georgia and a lot of my influence comes from the sort of music my Dad listened to. From people like Johnny "Guitar" Watson to Alexander O'Neal (I like to throw him out there and people are like wow)....
Saba, Ink: So, with all the artists out there on MySpace and all, what makes your sound so unique and your CD a must have?
Anthony: Because It is the Best (laughing)! Now you know, I very proud of my work and am looking forward to sharing it with the world.
According to Monte Lipman, President and CEO of Universal Republic Records "India.Arie's vision and sensitivity toward artists makes her a natural to launch an enterprise like SoulBird, and Anthony David is the ultimate artist to christen the label. His tremendous poise and ability to deliver great R&B songs coupled with his great relationship with India.Arie uniquely positions him as one of our breakthrough acts this year. Everyone at Universal Republic is excited to be a part of this great new endeavor."
And on that note, I'll just say that we'll be checkin' for Mr. Anthony David, especially since he says that his music is "giving me something I can feel." And we all know that a little music therapy comes in pretty handy on April 15th!
So, Until next time, I 'll be signing off .
