He said that he was an awful student in school and did very poorly. He later found his niche in acting. He has played many different roles and many different kinds of characters. I still remember him in "Magic." If you have not seen it, it is a classic. He played with Ann Margaret in the movie. He was infatuated with her and had a passionate lovemaking scene with her. He was not drop-dead gorgeous but he had the charisma that he is known for today. His acting is superb and dynamic.
What I still remember and I get chills when I think of it is the scene where he was arguing with his dummy. He is a ventriloquist in the movie and he murders a guy and dumps him in the lake. He is not by nature, or so it appears, to be a murderer. He is horrified and just needs to get rid of the evidence. When the dummy saw what he did he become psychotic. It is really creepy because you aren't quite sure if Anthony is going mad or if the dummy, may in fact be speaking. When he put him in a trunk to shut him up, the dummy says through the muffled trunk, "I'm going to tellllll."
If you have never seen Anthony Hopkins in this movie, it is a must see. I would like to purchase a copy of it. After seeing him play in that movie I was hooked. I also loved him in Silence of the Lambs too. The scene where he gets Starling to tell her most vulnerable secret, the screaming of the lambs, is chilling. At first you think there actually may be some humanity in him, but the next morning, he request lamb chops for breakfast, extra rare. It showed just how evil he was by getting her trust and then going in for the kill, even if only in his own twisted, sadistic mind.
I did not see the sequels, as I couldn't handle that kind of horror. After I heard from others about Hannibal Lector, I am glad I didn't. It was just a little too far-fetched for me, not to mention to horrifying. I like my horror a little more subdued. I like supernatural, psychological thrillers. I don't like torture and gore.
Anthony Hopkins is phenomenal and one of the most brilliant, talented actors I have ever had the privilege to watch. He is rather shy by nature and an admitted alcoholic. I am pretty sure he is a recovering alcoholic but is not revealing his anonymity. He used to drink with the best of them but has changed his ways. He said he was not a good husband in the past, but he believes he is now. I believe he is too.
He is quite the prolific and accomplished artist today. He sells a lot of his work and gives the proceeds to charity. If I made the money he did and was as famous as he is, I bet I could sell a lot of my work too. His work is pretty impressionistic and you can tell that he enjoys creating. He writes music and is absolutely amazing at everything he chooses to do. I cannot imagine loving anyone anymore than I do Anthony in the acting profession. There are many more that I love and respect, but I bet Anthony is one that I would really like as a person and a friend.
