This whole thing has been debated in Parliament before, but most people missed it and are now clamoring for a debate. Duh! The Conservative government didn't even send our boys and girls over there in the first place. That was done under the Liberal government who now sit in opposition and want to rehash the whole thing. We've got bigger fish to fry, folks.
I get sick when I see American army deserters here in Canada saying how much they oppose the war, how they won't go over if sent, and please, oh please let me stay here and don't send me back to face the music in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The way I see it, you signed up and you do what you are told, when you are told to do it. I have nothing against you getting an education on the taxpayers expense, but if a little thing like a war happens to delay that education for a time, so be it. Same goes for Canadian soldiers. You whine and cry that you want all the latest good stuff to help you fight, and then you balk at obeying commands. Hello! That is your job. To go in harms way to keep me and my family safe from terrorists. It's what you have been trained to do, so don't wimp out and say you didn't see it coming. Your primary objective is to kill people if required to do so, your education is secondary.
Patrick Hart, a former U.S. Army sergeant who fled to Canada last August with his wife and son, told the crowd he is often called a coward for his decision. "It takes a lot more courage to run away from a war than it does to participate in a war," said Hart, 32, who served in the army for nearly 10 years and could face 30 years in prison for deserting. He served in Kuwait in 2003-04 and he would have been shipped to Iraq if he stayed. Let me say it again, this man is a coward. He joined up to serve and if he can't do that, quit the army or face the consequences. Quit hiding over here.
"(The Americans) are no good, and we want them out," said Yezin Al-Qaysi, a high school student who left Iraq with his family and came to Canada during the Gulf War. This guy is just an idiot. If you have such a big mouth, go back to Iraq and help get rid of the terrorists so you can live free. What's that you say? You'd have your gonads stuffed down your throat if you opened your big mouth over there? Then shut the hell up over here and be grateful for the freedom you now enjoy. Freedom bought for you and me by men who died stopping tyranny many years ago. If you don't want to contribute to the long, hard fight for democracy, hang your head in shame and be quiet.
Omar Samad, ambassador from Afghanistan, said it best. "My embassy just called me this morning and said that some of the demonstrators were saying that Afghanistan was better off under the Taliban," he said Monday. "For God's sake, these people have no clue whatsoever about what they are talking about."

Post a CommentAustin, thanks for writing. Your point that he could have become a conscientious co-operator is well taken. Please read my article 'Anti War Protesters 5'. I think you may find it interesting.
I think he was right to refuse to fight in the war. However, you are right too: he shouldn't have run to Canada and hid. He should have stayed here (USA) and been courageous enough to openly be a conscientious objector (or, better, a conscientious cooperator - refusing to kill, but willing to be on the front lines as a medic/etc.)
Whether you agree with the war or not is irrelevant. However, you should solve problems by sticking around and confronting them... not running away from them.
If he did the right thing, then let him answer to the army instead of coming here to hide.
I agree 100% with Patrick Hart. And for you to call him a "coward" is disgusting. He did the right thing by not fighting in Iraq. Iraq is an unjust war. It is more important to be just than to follow the whims of the dispicable "leaders" in the Bush admin.
