Those using supplemental options to combat aging may be pleased to find out about the anti-aging qualities of lipoic acid. In an article published in the magazine Life Extension, the August 2011 issue, this topic was explored in depth when discussion was undertaken regarding the last 30 years of research that's been done. Throughout this research, much evidence has been obtained that supports how mitochondrial function is restored in more of a youthful way with the help of lipoic acid. As a result, top anti-aging strategies used by alternative practitioners everywhere now include implementing lipoic acid.
Lipoic Acid and Cell Degeneration
Revealing itself as an essential co-factor regarding enzyme reaction in mitochondrial cellular function, lipoic acid was shown to maximize the conversion of energy within cells. Distinctive qualities inherently part of lipoic acid have shown themselves to be helpful in slowing cellular aging by keeping the mutagenic oxidation that occurs in each cell at bay. This action makes it possible to decrease the aging process within individual cells by way of mitochondrial regeneration.
Fighting Obesity
The substances that contribute to weight gain and fat storage are also affected in a beneficial way through the use of lipoic acid. This occurs by it's ability to work with areas of the brain that diminish appetite and therefore food intake, resulting in weight loss. The fact that an increase in energy stimulation within the cells also occurs from this supplement, also lends a hand in a positive way to weight loss. This transpires due to improved activation of energy signals working inside individual cells, resulting in an increased metabolism.
Brain Cell Regeneration
Brain tissue is also preserved with lipoic acid. This occurs due to it's ability to protect brain tissue from the negative effects of end products that are part of a process called advanced glycation. This process leaves brain tissue inflamed and possessing damage from oxidation. Consequently, this will result in degeneration of the brain leading to neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and other dementia related conditions.
Anti-Cancer Nutrient
Due to the many anti-inflammatory qualities of lipoic acid, scientists have become increasingly interested in it's ability to intercede in the process of carcinogenesis. According to Life Extension's article, lipoic acid has shown positive characteristics in fighting cancers including those of the lung, breast, liver and blood (leukemia) variety. Research done has indicated that this nutrient acts to stop the duplicating cycle of cancer cells which assists with slowing/stopping the growth of harmful tumors.
