Anticipating Unexpected Moving Expenses

Rebecca Furtado
Moving is right up there with death and divorce in regards to the stress level it brings into the average person's life. Like death and taxes moving at some point is inevitable for most of us. It really does not matter how far it is there are expenses involved that you may not have even considered. When you plan your move there are two approaches.

You can estimate your move costs to be about %15 higher than you originally anticipated or you can make an attempt to estimate a number of unknown costs by looking at what those costs might be. You might want to double check with your mover to see that you cover all the possibilities.

Metropolitan Transit Surcharge - These are charges associated with moving from one metropolitan area to another. Cost like moving things from a larger truck to a smaller truck because some areas of the city may profit larger heavy trucks on some of their streets. Toll charges for using certain roads would also fall into this category as well as parking expenses if you are moving into the urban part of town Heavy Items - If you are moving things like appliances, pianos, or vehicles, consider extra charges that might come in for their weight.

Specialist - This is the money the moving company will charge you for specialty packing of that odd shaped antique mirror or moving that valuable grandpa no. Spelt charges are those things charges to move things that one would not encounter on a regular household move. These charges should be in the estimate. If you have smaller delicate and valuable object to move instead of paying the specialty charges consider moving it yourself. Of course if you are careless and break that two hundred year old tea set you will eat the cost. Some of the specialty cost is the extra cost of the insurance to move valuable objects.

Some moving companies will charge extra for costs of things you have neglected to tell them about like the grand piano they have to move up four flights of winding stair case at your new digs or having to park on a busy street to unload the truck. Be sure to give an accurate description of potential roadblocks the movers will encounter at your destination.

If you are self moving your home owners and auto most likely will not cover the cost of accidents or damage to content. Be sure to buy the insurance offered by the truck rental company, unless you're sure you are covered. Make sure valuable and fragile items are listed on a separate rider or specifically on the general coverage on your renters or homeowners insurance. Double check to make sure they are covered during the moving process. In the end if you plan ahead worrying about going over your moving budget does not need to be added to the hassle of packing and unpacking all of your boxes. You can at least lower the worry of finances during a time that is just stressful for everyone.

I live in a small city in the midwest. I am the pet parent to four cats, two birds , and one lonely dust bunny dog named Nigel. I have two human children. They are both teenagers and I occasionally see them.  View profile
