With millions of Americans on antidepressants it is important to be aware of side effects. Knowing how to counter these side effects will help in easing your depression. If you experience anything unusual call your doctor right away. Make sure to discuss with your physician each side effect you are experiencing and how often they occur. Most side effects will be short lived and infrequent. However, only your doctor knows if you need a medication change or different treatment. Here are some tips on overcoming the side effects of antidepressants.

Sexual Problems can be a huge concern to many couples where one (or both) individuals are taking antidepressants. This type of side effect is considered by many to be one of the worst. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing a low sex drive. A medication change or dose alteration may be needed.

Dry Mouth can be combated by drinking plenty of fluids, always having water handy, chewing sugarless gum, or sucking on hard candy. Remember that if you suck on candy to brush your teeth.

Nausea is not a common side effect of antidepressants but still it happens often enough to be a nuisance. Get up from a sitting or laying position slowly. Eat plain toast or crackers to settle your stomach.

Dizziness will knock you right off your feet before you know it. Remember to stand up slowly and be aware of how you feel. The worst thing you can do is just jump up and start about your day when your dizzy. Relax and take things slow.

Headache symptoms can stop us in our tracks and end our day. When antidepressants are involved there is almost nothing you can do except call your doctor. Do not take over the counter medications, herbal products, or any supplements without talking to your physician first.

Daytime Drowsiness can be alleviated by changing one simple thing in your daily routine: The time you take your medicine. If you're taking your medicine at 9 a.m. and falling asleep by 10 a.m. then try taking your medication at night.

Blurred Vision is a temporary side effect of antidepressants but be sure to contact your doctor as soon as this symptom develops.

Constipation is going to be something your doctor will help you with. A diet change might be in order. Eating bran cereal, fruit, and vegetables each day will help this side effect. Daily exercise will also counter constipation.
